The truest joy of the first months of Great Disasters (@tin_house )being in the world has been hanging and celebrating with friends in places near and far. Thank you for joining me in these sweet venues along the way, to Bruce Smith, Chris Beha, @benrhoffman , @austenleahrose , @garbanzogirlie , @molly.johnsen.poet , @jungyun71 , and @aaminaahmadwrites for the privilege of reading and being in conversation with you, and most of all to everyone at Tin House who’ve done so much to make these last months possible, and everything they’ve brought 💫

I got to speak with @tyleraustenkline about Great Disasters, movies, Mad Men, Midwest mythologizing, and I snuck in a couple book and movie recommendations as well 😈 My great thanks to Tyler for the careful time spent with the book which gave rise to such great questions, and to @adroitjournal for publishing our conversation ✨ Full interview at the link in bio —

What a truly joyful surprise yesterday to see Great Disasters ( @tin_house ) featured on @npr 's Books We Love list for 2025, along with this really lovely perspective on the book from Kristen Martin, which for me gets at the quieter heart of the story amidst the broader backdrop it's set against. I remain floored and so grateful to everyone and anyone who has bought the book, checked it out from their library, or just glimpsed it in a bookstore and shared a picture with me, and I'm thrilled to see it here at the end of this wild fall 💥 ✨ 💥

Very grateful to @literaryhub for giving me the chance to shout out Four Loko circa 2011 and speculate a bit about the swirl of things that gave rise to Great Disasters 🤩. Link in bio for full interview, which ranges from my desire to own and operate a newsstand to recitations of questionably sourced Jewish proverbs ❤️

Minneapolisians, or however one correctly says it: I have the great good fortune of reading from Great Disasters (@tin_house ) at Open Book this Wednesday, October 29th, at 6pm (presented by @milkweed_books ) followed by a conversation with the incredible Aamina Ahmad, whose novel “The Return of Faraz Ali” is among the best I’ve read in quite a while. If you’re able to come, I’d do love to see you. The event’s completely free, but RSVP at the link in my bio, if you would. Hope to see you all in the Mini Apple this Wednesday ☃️

My feelings about California remain complicated, though much softened by these places, rooms, and people (and many more not pictured) 🌲

San Francisco! Oakland! Berkeley! And environs! Just 48 sweet hours until I’ll be at @mrsdalloways in Berkeley, where I’ll read a bit from Great Disasters and be in conversation with Jacob Albert (@garbanzogirlie , ) 🤩 Come out, if you’re free and in the mood, and I’ll find a bar nearby to gather after for anyone who wishes. I hope to see you there, or soon! The photograph on the graphic, for the curious, is of Agnes Denes’s “Wheatfield—A Confrontation,” from 1982

I had so much fun curating and annotating a playlist to spiritually accompany Great Disasters, now available from @tin_house . Here’s a little preview, with my full playlist and musings at the link in my bio. These are all songs I deeply love that in one way or another echo an element or section or a spirit of the book. Thank you so much to @largeheartedboy for inviting me to be a part of this very great series 💫
