this Easter Sunday was my cousin’s 15th birthday —
I shot this a little less than a year ago the summer before she became a freshman in high school - I wanted to make something beautiful, fantastical, and just a touch edgy to commemorate that special summer between middle school and high school…
I wanted to depict a teenage mermaid but I definitely didn’t want it to be “sexy”: ultimately, Miami met POP!🐠
It was fun to go shopping for clothes at a few different Surf Styles in Miami Beach. I styled a second look with pink jelly sandals that were nostalgic for both her and me. Though I debated using a Labubu instead of a Flamingo, I’m happy with my choice a year later. (I also don’t think she would’ve accepted it lol)
I love this photo and it’s a bit emotional to me after her 15th birthday. There’s a cinematic warmth mixed with an introspective silence of growing up or “becoming too old” for dressing in mermaid tails (though we all know that’s not true)
