What was once a limitation becomes the entire spatial logic. A 45-year-old Tokyo apartment is reorganized around a massive cross-shaped beam—typically something you’d conceal. Here, it’s exposed, amplified, and treated almost like a ceiling-topography that defines how life unfolds beneath it. Instead of breaking the plan into private rooms, the design dissolves boundaries. Spaces flow into each other through calculated gaps—connected, yet never identical. Each quadrant formed by the beam develops its own character through subtle material shifts—rattan, lauan, perforated panels—creating difference without disconnection. Privacy isn’t fixed. Sliding elements move, adapt, respond. The home evolves as the family does. And then there’s the human-scale move: Key functions—sleeping, eating—are pulled slightly away from the beam, softening its presence. Moments of intimacy carved under a heavy, constant structure. This isn’t about designing space. It’s about reading structure as landscape—and learning how to live within it. Coop. This is a project for a dwelling defined by a massive cross beam. Seeking a living environment in which the family could live together beneath a single beam, the architect devised a space that preserves the beam’s overall integrity by stopping the partitions and finishes below it. ||梁下の改修|| Yuo can have light meal in the counter kitchen. Having the induction cooktop in the center minimizes cooking flow line. The important is the refrigeator is removed the kitchen line. ||梁下の改修|| Only here was attached the lauan ceiling to hide the hole. The reading lights can be turned on by pillow switch. The furniture switchs were mounted vertically along the direction of the oak. ||梁下の改修|| A lintel was placed under the beams, and the wall wasconstructed from a variety of materials, including rattan-clad sliding doors, perforated board, lauan walls, and lauan doors. Accessories and plants can be attached freely to the perforated board. The level under the beams was significantly warped, but the rattan sliding doors were passed through at a consistent height so that they could be attached and removed anywhere. ||梁下の改修|| First, the finish was stripped away to expose the concrete, revealing the entire structure of the beams. The cross-shaped beams divide the building into four areas. ||梁下の改修|| 都内にある築45年のヴィンテージマンションの改修。 住戸には巨大な十字の梁が横断しており、間取りを規制しつつも、上から覆うような包容力のある、極めて魅力的な地形であると感じた。地形を活かし、ひとつ梁の下で家族が共に暮らす風景を思い描いた。 The renovation project of a 45-year-old vintage apartment in Tokyo. A huge cross-shaped beam crosses the apartment, restricting the floor plan while creating an inclusive, enveloping landscape that felt extremely appealing. ||atelier house|| 外界との境界を象徴する巨大な建具は 金属粉を練り混ぜた塗料で仕上げた 手垢でもすぐに酸化して変色する 時間を纏う建具とした 持ち手だけが黒ずむ 人の痕跡が刻まれる The huge door symbolize the line between the outside world was finished by painting contain with metal powder. ||atelier house|| 仕上げを剥がして現れたコンクリートには パテ扱きのあとブラッシングをして 余分なパテを取り除いた 打放しの凹凸がそのままパテの濃淡に現れる この場でしか生まれない表情で仕上げた 画家のアトリエであることから発想した 逆フロッタージュの技法である The concrete that was revealed after the finish was peeled off was covered with putty and then brushed to remove excess putty.
