📚👀 Sketchbook Saturday I’m stuck home recovering from the flu—a good time to start posting my series on past sketchbook pages which I’ve been meaning to do for a while now. This weekend we go back 25 years (eek!) to 2001, when I fully embraced the sketchbook as my portable studio. It was my first summer as a studio assistant at @andersonranchartscenter which ultimately set the tone for my deep fascination with outdoors culture. Let’s see: 3x5 print sheets from a camera roll (yes, that’s tennis star Jennifer Capriati), printed emails, receipts from Aiko’s (the personalized cat drawings from Kimmy alone are worth framing), a drawing done by my nephew gifted to me from my sister, and some random landscape drawings. The yellowed corners are aged receipts from the Village Market in Snowmass. I did extensive journal entries in small script throughout—getting back to that again—and on what appears to be some directions to a party on Brush Creek Rd. Book is 9“ x 12” x 2.25” More next week! . . . #sketchbooks #2001 #bestofsevenart #drawing #collage

Meet the workshop facilitator: Regin Igloria of North Branch Projects 📖✨ Regin Igloria (he/him) is a multidisciplinary artist and educator originally from Manila and now based in the Chicagoland area. His drawings, artists’ books, sculptures, and performances portray the human condition as it relates to the natural environment and inhabited spaces. In 2010, he founded North Branch Projects, an organization that builds connections through the book arts, which allows him to work with various communities to create crossover between disparate populations. Regin will be facilitating the bookbinding workshop at @fabriksocialspaces on Tuesday, May 5 as part of the event More Calm, Less Stress: An Experiential Evening with Author Megy Karydes. At this interactive event, you’ll meet Megy and experience several of the science-backed practices featured in her book through hands-on mini workshops. I’m pleased to be exhibiting some new work at @open_studio_project in Evanston. It opens this Saturday, April 4, with a reception taking place 3-5 pm. Please stop by if you can! Storaging: This Necessary Moment “Regin Igloria combines his ongoing community bookbinding project, North Branch Projects (NBP), with the excavation process of his recently vacated storage unit. The exhibition consists of sculptural pieces resembling household furniture and hybrid objects that house hand-made books, collages, and book-related ephemera, revealing the fraught movement between past histories and a hopeful future.” I’ll be offering a free Community Binding session on April 11 at the studio as well. Please join me and make books! Details in link in bio. . . . #exhibition #communitybinding #makebooks #bestofsevenart #storaging

A beautiful day for a workshop at @elawafarm 📚 Today we worked on the buttonhole stitch and came away with a versatile handbound journal/sketchbook. Many thanks to the staff and participants—what a great group of students (with such sharp color choices)! Afterwards, I enjoyed a cold brew from the cafe and couldn’t resist the market. I’ve started a tradition: books…then beets. So good! . . . #makebooks #supportcommunitybinding #workshops #buttonholestitch #bookbinding

👀📚 Sketchbook Saturday ✌🏽 Today we go back to 1999, a century coming to a close and a glimpse into another sketchbook falling apart and needing some repair. I’ll do a short video on how I restitch these one day. I devoted quite a few pages on my trip to Iceland to run the Reykjavik Marathon in August—my first trip to Europe and first international marathon. I was still capturing photos with a disposable camera and getting blurry prints of the course. It was a small-ish race that looped twice around the city, much of it without any crowds or fanfare. I got 25th place—that’s how small the field was! I enjoyed reading the journal entries towards the end of the book: plotting and scheming for a cross country bicycle trip (which ultimately happened but on the West Coast), ambitions to do a residency at Ragdale (lol), ideas for a Polaroid sketch project of everyone I encounter starting in 2000, some serious naïveté about making art all the time, and correspondences (an actual letter!) from people I no longer know of their whereabouts. Next week I will dig into some storage unit excavations (we’re talking high school sketchbooks). Fun 😎 . . . #sketchbooks #1999 #iceland #snailmail #sketchbooksaturday
