New Release “Mourning Bloom” by Elf Freedom, (link in bio) Live at HM157 November 18th 2022 w/ members Nora Keyes vocals/ harmony overdubs, Bee Applessed: guitar , Jaqi Ryder: drums, & Jelani Felix: lead guitar. I named this improvisational piece I sang on with my band “Mourning Bloom” to honor all my friends who’s lives were cut short in the pandemic as they were still vibrant and blooming with so much life left to live. I also felt this title has a double meaning as a work that blooms from mourning. I had to go on a journey in the last couple weeks to complete this piece adding harmonies & visual art. Feeling very overwhelmed with grief from losing friends & my mother’s serious health issues since September I felt depleted & lost. I didn’t feel I had the capacity to make anything & honestly in this fast paced social media AI art landscape I questioned who is really going to look or listen to some time intensive rendering I may make & is that energy something I want to expose myself to as I’m navigating my current terrain. My partner Bee Appleseed insisted I complete this & I remembered a piece of wisdom given to me by long time teachers of mine, B.W. & S.E.W. - That imagination & creative energy produce a chemical elixir in your mind & body that has the ability to lift & transmute one’s conscious state. I went about completing the music & visual art with this soul medicine in mind & it did really help me - gave me a lift out of the darkness & a place to process what I was going through. The last leg of this work was the visual art. I worked using paint & collage - pulling pieces to collage with like a tarot divination. At one point I photographed the piece & realized it created an image mirrored that can be viewed in multiple directions. I saw many images in the realm - a heart shaped portal - faces - what I felt was my mother surrounded by angels, myself in a mourning gown holding a mask. . (continued in comments)
