AMBIGUOUS OBJECTS: STUDIO EIDOLA
Material Fictions at the Edge of Design and Architecture
—
Against the backdrop of a white-washed room, a dense layer of soil mixed with stones of varying sizes spreads across the floor, transforming the ground into something unstable, almost unsettled. From this uneven terrain, a series of vertical forms begin to emerge, rising quietly yet insistently, like solitary presences claiming space. They recall totems, or perhaps fragments of an archetypal architecture—structures reduced to their most essential state.
This is the first image encountered upon entering the website of Studio Eidola (
@studioeidola ), an interdisciplinary practice based in Zurich, founded by Denizay Apusoglu and Jonas Kissling. Apusoglu is an industrial designer; Kissling, an architect.
It is immediately clear at first glance that their work revolves around matter and material—elements the pair manipulates to create new possibilities and inform whatever project they may take up next.
