Inside @noneedforbills ’s world
Would you say your upbringing as well as surroundings influenced your creative approach?
I’m from a oilfield town called Odessa in Texas. Apparently it’s one of the most dangerous cities in Texas, so picture Gotham city but with no skyscrapers and a bunch of lifted trucks. And definitely, my upbringing influences my art right now. A lot of biblical elements in my art that come from being raised in a religious environment.
How would you describe your current style and its development?
My art journey started off with seeing my older brother draw, so for a long time I tried to draw just like him. It wasn’t until the pandemic hit when I was trying to find my own style. Discovering more art from Takeshi Obata and Jamie Hewlett helped a lot. Kinda gave me the confidence to draw whatever I wanted. I finally found a style unique to me now but If I were to describe it it’s like what if Gorillaz had a baby with Devil May Cry and that baby’s favorite movie is Robocop.
Where do you typically start?
I start with a big fat jo*nt and some music.
It’s pretty much a ritual now I can’t break. After all that I start sketching out some storyboards for my comic. I also take pictures of different areas or poses to incorporate into the panels. Once I know for sure how the scenes will play out I start doing everything digitally on my iPad.
You reference from pop culture a lot, especially comics or manga - which one is your favorite?
It’s impossible for me to just choose one so imma give you my top 5! 1.Death Note 2.Akira 3. Chainsawman 4.watchmen 5.Dorohedoro
What’s most challenging working digitally?
I struggled a lot at first trying to get used to the feeling of drawing on the iPad. I always drew on paper so it just didn’t feel right at first. It’s just a matter of time till you get used to it though. I couldn’t imagine having to make a comic traditionally, hell no! I envy those who can truly.
what character is closest to your personality?
I’d say I put a lot of myself into the Protagonist Nigel. I think from writing point of view it’s just way easier to incorporate experiences or conversations you’ve had.
