Creative process for a new composition has many steps. Draw in sketchbook, illustrate composition on wood block, line the bold art, carve graphic with chisels and knives, print base layer of custom yellow ink, dry time, remove more material from block matrix, roll up ink of one-of-a-kind black brown blue ink, print PARTY. Artist printed proofs, signed edition, clean upppp. Big ups to @prattfinearts & @seattle_print_arts for the generous support and Luv #printmaking #creativeprocess #seattleartist #reliefprint #woodcuts

Max Went West: An American Tale III - Woodcut Prints by Max Hautala Wisconsin-raised printmaker Max Hautala is returning from the mean streets of Seattle for his prodigal gallery show “Max Goes West: An American Tale III,” opening Friday, May 22nd at Grove Gallery in Walker’s Point. The exhibition will showcase a series of woodcut prints that reflect Hautala’s wild adventures through the Midwest and West Coast, scenes in which fish embrace warmly, and horses gallop along mountainous landscapes. In this show, you’ll meet old friends, new enemies, see a young mouse who can stand tall and witness a cowardly cat getting a new start as a dog. These prints demand engagement and deciphering, allowing viewers to contemplate their environment and inner selves through symbols, pictographs, and imagery that function as a visual language. The bold, graphic nature of woodcut printmaking is emphasized by the labor of carving, cranking, repetition, and the transformation of raw materials. While conceptually Hautala’s work fancies a fable, the woodcuts themselves stand fully in the physical world, having been hacked together by chisels and knives. “Carving and printing blocks the old way resists reliance on the digital world even though printmaking was what brought on digital communication,” said Hautala. “As images are near-unthinkingly reproduced, reposted, and repurposed through algorithmic channels, I present handmade images as a tactile counterpoint to digital overstimulation.” Opening Reception: Friday, May 22nd 5-9pm Sketchbook Workshop: Saturday, May 23rd 12-5pm (Pay what you want, supplies provided) Gallery Open Hours: Open on Saturdays, 12-4pm, through June 20th, 2026.

Mountainous landscapes peek over vistas, vibrating natural formations emit light. I carve birch plywood with chisels and knives to form woodblock reliefs. Then pigments of oil based ink are mixed and rolled out with a brayer and sandwiched onto a block. Art show May 22 at @gallerygrove in Milwaukee, WI! Please come and bring your friends on Friday night, 5-9pm. Sketchbook workshop on Sat, May 23. 🗻🏔️🗻 #natureart #blockprint #creativeprocess #printmaking #milwaukeeartist

@NoMaxPrint - Find a mentor. Doesn’t have to be in the same artform as you. Someone with a little bit more life experience and who enjoys spending time answering your questions. I want to do more residencies, murals, public artworks and teach workshops. My experience laboring in factories directly parallels my artistic practice, where I establish systems of efficiency to produce work in series, much like a production line. In the screenprinting factory in Houston, TX, I spent long hours pulling ink across screens in a high-volume, repetitive process designed for maximum output. This methodical, labor-intensive work shaped how I approach printmaking in my own studio, where I carve woodblocks, ink surfaces, and produce prints in structured, repeated motions. The mechanics of mass-production screenprinting, includes precise color layering, consistency control, and problem-solving, which have directly influenced my woodcut printing process and reinforced my commitment to working in multiples. Moving between industrial labor jobs and independent printmaking has strengthened my appreciation for production systems, repetition, and material experimentation. My process involves carving intricate symbols and pictographs into woodblocks, mirroring the precision required in factory settings. Each print I create is part of a larger body of work, evolving through a structured yet adaptable workflow.  *Forthcoming solo show in Milwaukee, WI at Grove Gallery @gallerygrove - New exciting prints, woodcut classics opening in Spring 2026.

@NoMaxPrint - Surround yourself with kind, creative, and motivated people. This will help. Keep in contact with people you care about. Each year I ride the wave of depression through different modes of making. Winter is time for carving wood, spring is printing time, summer is time for drawing, fall is for crocheting. I have to keep my hands busy. Teaching public printmaking workshops energizes me. I emphasize accessibility and physical engagement, bridging art with everyday life. These interactions reinforce my belief that process is as valuable as the final piece, fostering deeper engagement with visual language and material exploration within my communities.
