The joint Summer School organized by MADE Program and Arte Sella is based on the concept of “Techno-Craft,” which involves directly linking theoretical training in technology and science with hands-on craftsmanship. All too often, in fact, these two aspects have been separated by cultural legacies that are now completely outdated and fossilized within educational frameworks that have even viewed them as opposites. On the contrary, the most recent experimental research is moving toward overcoming these barriers. Just consider—to give one example—that high-performance technological materials such as carbon fibers have applications entirely comparable to those of textile tailoring and papier-mâché. The Summer School course offers participants the opportunity to engage with techniques and concepts, transcending the disciplinary boundaries that still constrain much academic research. Utilizing local resources, both in terms of hospitality and technical partnerships, the school’s workshops will be organized around complementary themes, also aligning with the expertise of the lead instructors. Participants will be able to choose one of three design workshops, which will lead to the creation of prototypes, artifacts, artworks, and products, while also taking part in lectures and meetings open to all working groups. For more than thirty years Arte Sella has been synonymous with art in nature, a unique creative workshop in Italy and in the world, where art has woven a continuous dialogue with the surprising nature of the Val di Sella, a side valley of the Valsugana, in Trentino. Hundreds of international artists have alternated over time, invited to interpret the spirit of the place and to return to look at the works of art in continuous transformation. The works created by these artists are characterized by the ability to preserve their own recognizable but not alien physiognomy, for a different arrangement with respect to time, which is no longer the rectilinear and conventional history of art, but, perishable, according to the natural mutations of the seasons. Since its foundation in 1986, Arte Sella has evolved by interpreting its role as a creative forge listening to nature and placing itself as a powerful tool initially available to a small Alpine community, later to a much wider world, to imagine possible future scenarios and possible dynamics of the man-nature relationship. In the aftermath of the Chernobyl tragedy the need to find a way to restore a new balance with nature was immediately born: at Arte Sella this need has declined, over the course of thirty-five years, through the gaze and vision of more than three hundred artists who, having abandoned the role of absolute protagonists of the creative act, have joined nature, their ally in the creation and transformation of the work. Over time at Arte Sella, art in nature, music, dance, photography, poetry and literature have found a place for research and common reflection. Workshops and Lectures with: @jacques_averna @agostinoiacurci @alisonmartin57 This year, the initiative will be curated by @Domitilladardi . Domitilla is an Italian design historian and curator. After the degree in Art History and a PhD in History and Criticism of Architecture, from 2003 to 2007 she was professor of History of Industrial Design and Contemporary Art History in the Department of Architecture of Ascoli Piceno University. From 2007 to 2023 she was the Design Curator at MAXXI Museum in Rome. Since 2019 she is the co-founder and curator of EDIT Napoli, international fair of independent design. In 2016 and 2017 she curated “Object”, the collectible design section of Miart - Modern and Contemporary Art Fair in Milan. Since 2007 she has been professor of History of Design at IED in Rome, and she taught as Visiting Professor in several universities such as at Universidad de Navarra in Pamplona, Made Program in Siracuse. She curated several exhibitions, such as: “Alcantara-MAXXI Project” (from 2011 to date, with Giulio Cappellini), “Universo Rietveld” (MAXXI Rome, 2012, with Maristella Casciato and Ida van Zjil), “Gaetano Pesce. Il tempo della diversità” (MAXXI Rome 2014), “Temporanea. Studio Formafantasma” (Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Paris, 2015), “100x100 Achille” (Fondazione Achille Castiglioni, Milan, 2018, with Chiara Alessi). ✨Camminando lungo una via che è molto più di un luogo: è una comunità in trasformazione! Dal 1956, quando Albini, Helg e Manfredini ne disegnarono l’identità come modello di architettura sociale, via Wybicki continua a evolversi. Nuovi abitanti, nuove abitudini, nuovi modi di vivere gli spazi si intrecciano ogni giorno, generando domande ma anche possibilità. In queste settimane abbiamo raccolto voci, osservato gesti quotidiani, condiviso tempo con chi abita il quartiere. Abbiamo immaginato scenari, attivazioni, occasioni di incontro: non risposte definitive, ma spunti capaci di aprire dialoghi e nuove prospettive. Questo progetto si conclude, ma lascia in eredità un invito: continuare a guardare via Wybicki come uno spazio vivo, da costruire collettivamente, attraverso pratiche quotidiane e momenti straordinari. Grazie alla comunità di Reggio Emilia - e in particolare a tutte le persone di via Wybicki - per averci accolto, ascoltato e accompagnato lungo questo percorso. Dal 7 al 10 maggio, nel @parco_paduli , @emilio_sanapo conduce un corso pratico di quattro giorni sulla costruzione in calce e canapa — uno dei materiali più interessanti della bioedilizia contemporanea: traspirante, isolante, leggero, completamente naturale. Il corso si svolge all’interno del cantiere-scuola LA CASA, la ristrutturazione di una caseddha salentina in pietra a secco che la @scuola.di.agritettura sta portando avanti dall’8 aprile. I partecipanti entrano in un cantiere vivo, in cui ogni lavorazione è già in corso, e contribuiscono concretamente alla costruzione dell’edificio. In quattro giorni si lavora su due fronti: i muri di tamponamento in calce-canapa gettata in cassero secondo la tecnica del getto in opera monolitico, e la copertura del tetto — uno strato continuo di calce-canapa posato sull’incannucciato in canne arundo locali, con finitura in cocciopesto impermeabilizzante. Nessun coppo, nessuna guaina: un tetto che respira. Nessuna esperienza richiesta. Si lavora con le mani, si impara guardando e facendo. La partecipazione al workshop è gratuita. Interviene @MatildeLosi Matilde Losi è designer, editor e curatrice. BA in Design del Prodotto Industriale al Politecnico di Milano e MA in Design Curating&Writing alla Design Academy Eindhoven. La sua pratica prende forma dalla scrittura fino a trasformarsi in diversi progetti che spaziano dalla curatela alla produzione di mostre nazionali e internazionali. La sua ricerca si concentra sull’apparato espositivo come infrastruttura complessa e multidimensionale. Ha co-curato la quarta edizione della Porto Design Biennale “TIME IS PRESENT. Designing the Common” con Angela Rui (Porto, 2025), “ITALY: A New Collective Landscape” (Milano 2023; Hong Kong 2024; Shanghai 2024) con Angela Rui e Elisabetta Donati De Conti e “Moving in Stasis” per la Design Academy Eindhoven (Rotterdam 2020). È stata editor per Fictional Journal e per le due edizioni di “Make Economy Yours Again” di Baltan Laboratories. Ha prodotto Alcova 2021 e la mostra “DAE 75: Intergenerational Graduation Show” (Milano 2022). Ha scritto per Elledecor.it e Zero.eu. Attualmente è consulente per la Direzione Accademica di IED, Design Ambassador per il programma “Hello Darkness” di BASE e prosegue la sua stretta collaborazione con la pittrice Nathalie Du Pasquier dal 2016. 📆 Giovedì 23 aprile, ore 18.00 📍 La Polveriera, Reggio Emilia Quarto appuntamento di “Design per il mondo reale” Visioni e revisioni L’arte partecipata come strumento di rappresentazione e riappropriazione di storie collettive. Interviene @patrick_waterhouse Patrick Waterhouse (1981) è un artista britannico che esplora la natura mutevole del nostro modo di comprendere il passato. Attraverso processi che giocano con la rappresentazione narrativa, il suo lavoro mette in luce la costruzione della storia e le sue origini. Un elemento centrale nella pratica di Waterhouse è la collaborazione, che si sviluppa attraverso il dialogo e il coinvolgimento diretto delle persone e delle comunità rappresentate. Tra i suoi progetti più rilevanti: “Ponte City”, un’indagine su un grattacielo cilindrico di cinquantaquattro piani che domina la città di Johannesburg, realizzata insieme al fotografo Mikhael Subotzky. E “Restricted Images”, un progetto in cui l’artista ha invitato i membri delle comunità Warlpiri di Yuendemu e Nyiripia, in Australia, a intervenire su immagini che li rappresentavano attraverso la tradizionale pittura a punti. Le opere di Waterhouse sono conservate in importanti collezioni pubbliche e private, tra cui il Centre Pompidou, il San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, il Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum di New York, la National Gallery of Art di Washington D.C. e la Walther Collection di Neu-Ulm, in Germania. Tra i riconoscimenti ricevuti figurano il Discovery Award alle Rencontres de la Photographie di Arles nel 2011 e il Deutsche Börse Photography Prize nel 2015 per “Ponte City” (con Mikhael Subotzky). Il cantiere della @scuola.di.agritettura è ufficialmente aperto!☀️ Venerdì 10 è partito “La Casa 1”, il workshop per ristrutturare e rifunzionalizzare una “caseddha” del @parco_paduli . Una caseddha abbandonata da anni, con il tetto crollato e i muri in parte ceduti, è diventato uno spazio di apprendimento collettivo. Ogni lavorazione dei materiali naturali è al tempo stesso un atto costruttivo e un atto pedagogico. Ti aspettiamo per sperimentare e costruire insieme! 🏗️🪚🧱 La partecipazione al workshop è gratuita.
