We’re back on print! 📰 A lot has changed since our last print issues five years ago; we’ve now merged Northern Living and Southern Living into Nolisoli—which is now also under the banner of @lifestyle.inq . But while we’ve changed shape and form over the years, our heart stays the same: Nolisoli is still here to champion all things local. In this issue: in conversation with fiber artist Raffy T. Napay (@napayyyyy ), the enduring art of master woodmaker Benji Reyes (@benjireyes ), the resurgence of OPM on vinyl with Backspacer Records (@backspacerrecords ), an updated San Juan City Guide, and more. Check out the January 2026 issue in the Sunday issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Tag us if you’ve seen it already 👀 More distribution locations soon. #nolisoliph #lifestyleinq

As one might expect from a self-owned studio, every corner of @studioromanph is filled with @omansantos ’ work—from the mugs used to serve guests, to the decor in their small fish pond, down to the clinking wind chimes and tiny bits and bobs scattered over desks, which are shaped like flowers, fruits, and even tiny humans. “I like to keep my hands busy. Mahilig akong magbusisi tsaka magbutingting,” he says of his affinity for ceramics. “It’s therapeutic. It helps me relax.” In the gallery, a wall is filled with 180 pieces of ceramic corals, all made by Santos. This is his most popular work—the one that people often come to see. The coral pieces are incredibly detailed, as if plucked from the seas themselves. “Usually ‘yong mga students na pumupunta [dito] is ‘yong mga pagod, mga burnt out na sila,” Santos says. He knows the type, he says, because he’s been in the same boat. This common ground makes it easier for him and his students to connect, he finds. And although he—funnily enough—doesn’t like teaching (“Hindi kasi ako sanay sa tao. But if you want to be an expert in a field, there should be a transfer of knowledge.”), he does so. He considers his students one of the most fulfilling aspects of his art practice. Read more on the site. @jerichorosalesofficial dubbed 2024 his ‘Yes year,’ where he did anything and everything, from breaking the news on television to making his return to teleseryes with “Lavender Fields.” This 2025 and beyond, he doesn’t seem to be slowing down at all. In fact, he looks as assured and at ease on his path as one can possibly be. “This is how I’ve decided to live already,” said Rosales during our interview after the “Bayani Ba’To?” forum launch last July 26. And for “Quezon,” his latest ‘yes,’ there’s both excitement and disbelief for Rosales, who didn’t expect to land the role. But in that same breath, there’s trust and hope in the power of the film to touch, move, and empower—just as it did for him while shooting “Quezon,” and as the “Bayaniverse” once did for “Heneral Luna” and “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral.” “Expect to be shaken. Expect to be entertained. But expect that once you step out of the cinema, you will be a different person. You will carry with you a lot of questions. You will carry with you a sense of pride.” Read more on the site. While brownouts are an actual term used to refer to a loss of electricity, it’s not the type we colloquially associate with it. When there’s power at your neighbor’s house but not at yours, that’s a power interruption. Power interruptions could be due to scheduled maintenance, accidental damage, or not paying your bill on time. These are usually limited to a specific area, like maybe just one house or a street. Brownouts are what happens when there’s still electricity, but just not enough to go around—hence “brown.” An example of a brownout is if you live in a condo or an apartment building and there’s scheduled power maintenance, but you’re only allotted a specific amount of energy. That means you can turn on a light and there’s running water, but you can’t turn your air conditioner on or use anything else that requires more than minimal amounts of energy. Blackouts are when there’s a partial or complete failure of the electrical grid system—hence “black.” A good example of a blackout is what happened post-Yolanda in 2013. Due to the typhoon, parts of Visayas lost power for weeks. The extreme weather phenomenon destroyed a lot of power lines, transformers, and other necessary equipment for the proper distribution of energy. Communication lines were also affected during the time. As with other Filipinisms, this is a difficult habit to shake—but we don’t even have to shake it at all. As long as other people know what we mean, that’s completely fine. At least now, though, we know what these things actually (technically) mean. Story by @andreiana #nolisoliph

Music is a powerful art form that shouldn’t be overlooked in any space. It can energize, inspire, and calm, which is why spaces like Form and Frequency make way for how sound moves through them. Story and photos by @campfiremedia Layout by @zoesabandal #nolisoliph

Morning Sun Eatery has expanded and turned its neighborhood into a thriving culinary destination, recently taking over a space across the street to house a dedicated grilling station and a kitchen for their special bibingka and puto bumbong. As Philippine gastronomy earns international traction and Michelin recognition, Morning Sun Eatery stands as a testament to Ilocano grit and the indomitable spirit of a Filipino cook backed by a ride-or-die family. Their 30-year journey, marked by a fateful Quezon City sunrise, has blazed new trails for Philippine carinderia culture on the global stage. Along the way, they’ve also paved the path for the humble, ubiquitous eateries of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao to finally bask in their rightful place in the sun. Put against more individual forms of transport like cars or motorcycles, jeepneys offer something entirely different. They operate on a shared system—less control and more of a shared space. They remain one of the best examples of how movement is shared within a collective. As the city continues to change, the question isn’t just how to improve transport, but what gets carried forward in the process. Jeepneys may evolve, but the culture around them—the shared space, the small exchanges, that everyday familiarity, that sense of community—is just as important to consider. The concept of mainit ang ulo is a metaphor for human attitudes. Actual heat can also impact our mental health, as a higher heat index can also be a trigger for someone to be more “mainit ang ulo.” Story by Carl Lorenz Cervantes @sikodiwa #nolisoliph

Moms are a million things, and no two are alike. You can often sense a mom by her energy—a bustling mind working 24/7 to keep everything afloat, from emotions and personal passions to car logistics and what to have for dinner. And despite it all, a mom remains stable, her core intact, expanding through the act of loving and raising children. These mothers, formerly featured on Lifestyle.INQ, embody this multiplicity in their respective fields while also revealing the particular ways they love their children. For Mother’s Day today, they share what motherhood means to them. Read more in the link in bio. Story by @lalasingian Layout by @zoesabandal #mothersday #mom #lifestyleinq
