I've always loved these sculptures for the way it plays with contrasts between order and chaos. The geometric stainless steel structure evokes a rigorous minimalism, but the interior, lined with hundreds of flexible vinyl rods, introduces an organic, almost tactile tension.
Eva Hesse reminds us that beneath the smooth surface of things, beneath the illusion of control, the world is made up of asperities, accidents and uncertainties. A work that, without saying a word, expresses more about the human condition and our contradictions than many a speech.
