Celebrating our 20 years with @amy_sall ’s beautifully curated NØ FØRMAT! playlist, filled with her cherished African treasures🤎 "Music permeates my day-to-day life. I listen to whatever moves me and resonates sonically and spiritually. I especially love listening to songs that evoke nostalgia of my childhood, or evoke a certain feeling that cannot always be named. My love of music is a beautiful inheritance, and it came from my father who listened to everything from Mbalax, to Soukouss, Reggae, Salsa-influenced African sounds, and Senegalese music of the sabar and griot traditions. He had an incredible collection of cassette tapes that he played on his stereo every weekend in our home. My siblings and I grew up in music. We were always enveloped in the sounds of our culture, and exposed to sounds of other cultures. Being born and raised in New York City, the love of Hip-Hop and R&B runs deep. They heavily informed my childhood and adolescent years, and continue to be mainstays in my life. Over the years, my taste has grown and developed into a more expansive, rich palette which includes more genres (those who know me know I am a big fan of jazz, for example) and music from all around the world. I find pleasure in sharing what I listen to with others,and do so often with friends, loved ones and my online community. Fela Kuti said "Music is a spiritual thing," and I believe this. ‘Massa’, the title of @fatoumata_diawara__ 's new album can be translated many ways - but in Wolof it means the strength to endure. For the cover feature of our new issue, the Malian artist shares stories behind why it is her most autobiographical album to date, navigating the paradoxes of homesick loneliness to the joyful creativity found in solitude, alongside themes of grief, justice and faith. “I’m making a resume of my life. ‘Massa’ is telling people, ‘this is how I feel today’,” she says. This June, she will headline Liverpool's @africaoye , marking 15 years since her UK debut at the festival. "They will be seeing a free woman, very free," she says of the upcoming performance.
