#Repost @secondfloorstudios ・・・ We’re continuing our Studio Member Spotlight as we get ready for our forthcoming Open Studios events✨ This week, we begin with the incredibly talented Liesa Bacchus @liesabacchus Liesa is a British painter of Indo-Caribbean heritage, with parents who hail from Trinidad and Guyana. Her artistic practice is a powerful exploration of her dual identity, with her family and their history serving as the main source of inspiration. Liesa draws upon their lived experiences in the Caribbean and their subsequent move to England—some in the 1950s as ‘Windrushers’ and others in the 1980s, post the Commonwealth Immigration Act 1971. Her current body of work, titled ‘Indentured Servitude,’ focuses on a lesser-known chapter of the British Empire: Indentureship. This historical period resulted in the mass displacement of people from India to other British colonies to resume work on plantations after the passing of the abolition of slavery in 1834. Liesa’s own ancestors were part of this mass displacement, sent from their native India to Guyana and Trinidad. The compositions in this ongoing series are based on photographs sourced from online archives that document the Indentured Indian labourers across the colonies. Liesa made a deliberate choice to construct her work around this historical documentation, as it not only provides a vital level of accuracy and insight but also serves as a basis to question why something that was so attentively well-documented continues to remain unknown to so many in Britain today. Don’t miss the chance to see her compelling work in person at our upcoming Open Studios (Wembley Park - Studio PH05) 🗓️ Sevenoaks: 27th & 28th Sept 🗓️ Wembley Park: 4th Oct @secondfloorstudios @wembleyparkldn @quintainliving @brentcouncil @brentartistnetwork #ArtistSpotlight #LiesaBacchus #OpenStudios #StudioMembers #IndoCaribbean #Windrush #ArtHistory #BritishArt #Sevenoaks #WembleyPark #Painting

The Painting Open was a great way to end 2024 and the current incarnation of @noformatgallery As many of you know @secondfloorstudios has been cross subsidising the gallery for over five years. SFSA own the Foundry studio site, seeking to protect affordable workspace for visual artists for the next six generations. Due to interest rate pressures the gallery needs to be converted into two large, ground floor studios for the foreseeable future to help with the studio cost base. Thank you to everyone who has exhibited, visited, volunteered, experimented in the space, it has been fantastic to watch the gallery morph and reflect the ideas of those in the space. Until our next incarnation…

Congratulations to FROM THE GROUND, UP presenting WITHIN DECAY @noformatgallery this evening. Artist: SOL Produced by: Lua Costa “Within Decay” is an immersive exhibition inspired by the fluidity and interconnectedness of nature, focusing on the beauty of decay. Set in the heart of London’s urban landscape, this exhibition offers a retreat where visitors can pause, reflect, and reconnect with the natural rhythms often overlooked in the city’s fast-paced environment. The show delivers a multi-sensory experience, blending organic forms, tactile materials, and evocative soundscapes to capture the serenity of natural ecosystems, serving as a reminder of our intrinsic connection to the earth and the importance of ecological balance. Currently in their final year of BA (Hons) Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, Sol draws inspiration from their tactile experiences in nature, particularly the act of gardening, to create deeply immersive artworks. Runs until 24th November. @secondfloorstudios @csm_news @fine_art_csm @shapeslewisham
