Guzman is a London-based DJ, producer, and co-founder of Squares, an East London crew and party known for its forward-thinking underground sound. Taking deep inspiration from noughties minimal, electro, and techno records, his style is defined by use of trippy textures, rolling grooves, and percussion-led, bass-driven tracks to guide the energy and intensity of the crowd. Montevideo-born DJ and producer, Manuel Jelen came into music as a self-taught producer, driven purely by the desire to create. That pull eventually led him behind the decks, where collecting and selecting became an extension of that same curiosity. Since then, his relationship with music has remained in motion, a constant process of discovery, shifting and evolving over time. Although Manuel’s music is influenced by various genres and styles, it is techno, acid and electro that form the common thread running through his sets, which traverse the different variations between them, ranging from the most abstract to the rawest and most visceral. Since 2013, he’s held a residency at Phonotheque, a cornerstone of Uruguay’s electronic landscape both the club and the record label. With it being a space that played a defining role in shaping his musical identity, through both the local scene and ongoing exchanges with like-minded artists. Calla drifts with intent across a full spectrum of sound tracing lines from techno to prog, electro to trance; always leaning towards the darker edges which naturally bleeds into his label, Zonate. As founder, he’s shaped a label that’s quietly found its way into the bags of artists such as Quest, DJ Koolt, John Talabot, Z@p , Raphael Carrau and DJ Masda; a quiet testament to the label’s growing reach and distinct voice.
