For 20+ years @nbcsports and the University of Notre Dame have been teaming up on projects around the world that connect storytelling with real work happening in local communities. This year we were lucky enough to be invited along to Malawi 🇲🇼 . We based out of @fishermansrestlodge outside Blantyre and spent our days in nearby villages and schools where water wells are a lifeline for the community. When a pump breaks, it can mean kids walking miles for water or even schools shutting down. What’s amazing is seeing how that problem is being solved. With support from Notre Dame and the local teams who have been doing this work for more than 40 years, communities are now learning how to 3D print replacement parts, maintain their own pumps, and build systems that are more reliable and sustainable. Our job was simple. Spend time with people, listen, earn their trust, and try to capture honest moments that help tell the story of the work being done there. Trips like this always shift something inside you. At first you notice the things people don’t have. But pretty quickly you start noticing the things they do have. Community. Joy. Pride in their schools. Kids laughing and chasing each other around the well the moment the water starts flowing again. It’s a good reminder that perspective changes when you step outside your own bubble. We started the week on safari at Majete Wildlife Reserve seeing elephants, hippos, zebras and more wildlife than we could count. The next morning we were helping repair a broken school well and watching kids crowd around when the pump finally started working again. Four days on the ground, two long travel days each way, and every minute was worth it. Thanks to Director @mrahamin , producer @cloonmeister , photographer @mlcaterina , and our Johannesburg based AC/B cam shooter @jp_turvey . And to our incredible local team arranged by fixer Durand @africanfixertv led by Malawi fixer Jones our drivers, security, and everyone at Fisherman’s Rest who welcomed us like family. What started as a mountain assignment in Livigno turned into 24 straight days embedded with @snoopdogg all over the north of Italy. Once that shift happened, we knew this would be a different kind of Olympic Games. We became the crew capturing it all. Early features in Milano. An epic adventure to the Dolomites in Cortina. Quick trip to the mountain cluster in Livigno. Fine dining and a night at the Opera with @marthastewart48 . A private look at The Last Supper. Michelin-star kitchens. Medal moments. And the in-between stuff you can’t plan for. Most scenes just started. No countdown. No reset. We stayed ready. A big part of that rhythm comes from working closely with Director Ollie Stokes. We’ve been side by side for almost 15 years now, and there’s a trust and shorthand that only comes from time. We don’t overtalk. We don’t overthink. In fast-moving environments like this, that understanding is everything. We can adjust mid-scene, pivot on a dime, and keep moving without breaking stride. We collaborated with other talented NBC shooters across venues (@egirgash @samsonchanfilms @tm5000 @gregkubik_dp and more, sent everything to the cloud so @pickstagram77 and the @nbcolympics Stamford team could start building while we were already chasing the next story. Living it in real time and then seeing it come together later is always a special feeling. Huge thanks to @mol_sol3 and @jackfelling at @nbcsports for the trust and opportunity. The @kentuckyderby for @nbcsports … what a week! @noahnoah and I have been a part of some big events over the years, but this one felt different—almost like a mini Olympics in terms of the pace, the scale, and the grind. There was so much happening in every direction. Horses thundering by, crowds roaring, hats flying, rain falling—it was nonstop in the best ways. All week we were up early—at the paddock on the backside before sunrise, with the trainers and jockeys, in and out of the silks room, and everywhere else trying to take in as much of the world of Churchill Downs as we could. Derby Day itself came with a whole new challenge: nonstop rain—keeping gear dry with cut up trash bags, staying focused, working fast—but even with all that, it was still an incredible experience. One we’ll never forget. Now that we’ve had a taste of it, we’re looking forward to diving even deeper into this world next time around….maybe just a little drier. 😬 Thanks to Producers @anniekkillian @rachel_goodman_ and @maeveokay for guiding us through this week, and @jackfelling and the rest of the NBC Sports family for their trust and collaboration.
