Newman is a keen player. Seeing him play jazz tunes on his keys makes me think of art, and what the nature of artistry is. Taking photos of a keyboard player is not an easy task, but seeing Newman in a state of flow undertaking this difficult task of fusing together the work of his band mates makes the task somewhat easier. Through his playing he creates visual hooks which inspire the eye when taking a photograph. Never static he always creates ups and downs, backs and forths in the music. Setting melody over the Top of what the group forms and fuses when they hybridise off one another. On the night the crowd knew it too. They stopped, stayed, stared. Engaged. The whole group flows well into one another, stopping for breaks; the breaks aren't a sign of them letting up. Jazz, like photography, as an art form allows for momentary expression. That note might only be struck once and here in a moment of inspiration, as I might only get that one composition in a life time. I approach all concerts like this, as a moment of "Jazz" Street Photography being the best approximation for the craft I try and replicate here. It's not a music session in a studio. Like it's not a portrait in a select environment. Its playing to strangers, hoping they for a moment stop and listen, and through listening that's how they speak and say "I've enjoyed your music" this is what it's like to see Newman play. This is his he inspires me to see him in his portrait.
