In one week, the short film programme The Fall Was Hard, but I Love the Taste of Pavement on My Tongue arrives at Pilar in the cadre of their heartbreak festival. Concretely, the programme probes what it looks like to still dream the dreams of a young girl within a patriarchal society structured around oppression and closed doors.

From what dizzying heights of possibility did you fall, and where did you land? What ground do your feet walk now and does it feel like home? I want to know what it is to dream in the face of a closed door. The world was never an oyster because the fall was already written.

Meet @no.maxwell ! Max is no stranger in Pilar, as she curated a screening series with @luci.collective last year. Max works out her own projects, which one fitted perfectly in our Festival theme Heartbreak โค๏ธโ๐ฉน
In 'The Fall Was Hard, but I Love the Taste of Pavement on My Tongue', she explores heartbreak through the shock of meeting with reality and the shattering of childhood fantasies.
Max layers intimate and startling fantasies from women filmmakers, ranging from whirling girlhood desires to cracked and limping hybrid dream/nightmares. In a grown-up world that has left innocence and naivety behind, the unbridled dreaming of a young girl still courses wildly beneath the surface like bubbly lava under a cooling earth.

For this short film programme at ASAP festival, the theme of heartbreak is interpreted through the shock of meeting with reality and the shattering of childhood fantasies.
As small children, we are raised to believe that the world spreads out before us in a dazzling array of possibility and potential. We are encouraged to dream. Time passes and we grow up. Reality sets in and, for many women, it is a crude wall, fencing off our girlish dreams. The contemporary patriarchal society that we have inherited and now inhabit is a resounding fracture of that potential and possibility that used to dangle before us. What dreams are still possible in the face of the cold, hard intrusion of reality?
This programme layers intimate and startling fantasies from women filmmakers, ranging from corrupted girlhood desires to cracked and limping hybrid dream-nightmares. In a grown-up world that has left innocence and naivety behind, the unbridled dreaming of a young girl still courses wildly beneath the surface like bubbly lava under a cooling earth.
We invite you to come and go throughout these grotesque and disfigured dreams that are only possible after the fall. These fleeting impressions are for you to collect like plastic pearls on fishing wire. Come hungry, come sleepy, come curious.

In one week, we do the first session of Catch & Throw ๐พ๐
I invited fellow filmmaker @boverpoten to think in film together. As our screening takes place on the day before we move into the new lunar year๐งง of the fire horse ๐๐ฅ, I proposed that we take @dgongart 's short film Horse (2022) as a starting point. The fire horse represents passion, speed, and choosing motion over inertia. So around this short film, we've collaboratively built a programme of twisty transformations and powerful energy to bring us into the new year.

This new screening series approaches film not only as an audio-visual language, but as a real form of communication between people and places. Building upon existing relationships, I invite friends, colleagues and peers to programme short film screenings collaboratively, each time as a pair. We depart from the same point, and like two oars steering one boat, we'll find out together where we end up.
Catch & Throw is nomadic and takes place in alternative and unconventional screening spaces. In this way, short films infiltrate the spaces we inhabit and the relationships we form. The act of film-watching becomes a form of human connection.
"It was an oasis... this dark vast room... an artificial and democratic night, the great equalitarian night of the cinema, truer than the real night, more delightful, more consoling than any real night"
The Sea Wall - Marguerite Duras
The first beta-version of Catch & Throw takes places on February 16th at 20:00 in Jette. More details soon ๐

It's always bittersweet to arrive at the end of something. For two and a half years, LuCi has been a vibrant whirlwind of energy, tracing pathways all over Brussels. From cinรฉ-club to curatorial project, this constantly-evolving collective has enjoyed the freedom to experiment and an incredible amount of support from peers and colleagues.
Starting from the very first meeting in a classroom at LUCA to my current exit from LuCi moving image collective, I am eternally grateful for all these moments that have taught me so much.
So thank you to all our generous hosts and collaborators. I started listing out all the names, but it got extremely long. In any case, you know who you are and that I hold you in high esteem.
And now? I'm facing forwards to the next thing ๐ฌ๏ธ

Max Ferguson invites artist and friend Yasmine Deroui to present her performance Medea(s)โa visceral exploration of her personal relationship with her uterus. This evening offers a thought-provoking opportunity to rethink the female body, or bodies with a uterus, and challenge conventional definitions and narratives surrounding them. Through art, dialogue, and performance, we will delve into the complexities and layers of these bodies, reshaping the myths that have long defined them.
