Leaving a broken system was never really a hard decision. The hard part has been to find a solution that is scaleable, accessible and that everyone can be a part of.🤔
I decided to start at the end of waste. The landfill.
Gosa landfill is the largest of 4 officially recognised legal dumpsites in Abuja, and what an experience that visit was!
Things that rot and things that do not, all mixed together in vast apocalyptic mountains that stretched as far as my eyes could see.
However, in what I expected to be the end, I found an informal waste management system. A community of 'Baban bola' (wastepickers) sorting and selling paper, plastic, glass, metal, textiles. A thriving circular economy where 'waste' means survival!♻️♻️♻️
