Parliament of Ghana has confirmed the detention of Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, in the Netherlands amid reports linking him to an international financial crime investigation.
According to a statement issued by Parliament, the MP was detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. The statement added that the Speaker of Parliament and the leadership of the House are in contact with Ghana’s mission in The Hague to gather detailed information on the matter.
Sources within Ghana’s law enforcement agencies reportedly told GhanaWeb that the investigation is connected to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and involves allegations of money laundering and suspected romance scams amounting to approximately US$32 million.

Nine miners have been trapped following the collapse of a mining pit on Wednesday evening at Konongo in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The miners were reportedly working underground when the pit caved in, blocking their exit route and leaving them trapped beneath the debris.
Rescue teams and fellow miners have since been at the site working tirelessly to rescue the victims, although no one had been rescued as of the time of this report.
The Asante Akyem Central Municipal NADMO Director, Lanbon Joseph, has confirmed that all nine miners trapped after a pit collapse at Konongo are alive and safe.
Speaking to Adom News, he said officials are maintaining continuous communication with the miners through radio contact, and so far, none of them has lost their lives.
According to him, the miners are currently surviving on water they carried into the pit, while rescue efforts continue above ground.
He urged families and residents to remain calm as emergency teams work to reach them safely.
Mr. Lanbon added that response teams, including the National Ambulance Service, are on standby to provide immediate medical support once the miners are brought out.
Charles MacCarthy, an editor at Hawk Newspaper, has suggested that residents of Asante Akyem North should prepare for the possibility of a by-election amid uncertainty surrounding the status of detained Member of Parliament, Frimpong Kwame Ohene.
Speaking during a phone interview on Okay FM, MacCarthy said developments surrounding the MP’s detention could significantly affect his ability to continue representing the constituency in Parliament.
“We should open ourselves to that option because where the issue has gotten to, a by-election will surely happen,” he stated.
The Hawk Newspaper editor argued that if the MP remains absent for an extended period, constitutional questions regarding parliamentary representation may arise.
“When the American FBI gets hold of you, I don’t think he is coming anytime soon,” MacCarthy said during the discussion.
He further pointed to Ghana’s constitutional provisions on representation, suggesting prolonged inability to perform parliamentary duties could have consequences.
“Our constitution is clear when it becomes critical for you to represent your people in Parliament,” he added.
MacCarthy also referenced other high-profile international legal matters involving Ghanaian figures, implying that such processes can be lengthy.
“Even Ken Ofori-Atta, who is wanted in Ghana, the Americans have refused to hand over… how much more this. However, if he should come to Ghana, it will be a miracle,” he remarked.
His comments come amid ongoing public debate surrounding reports of the MP’s detention abroad and the potential impact on representation for constituents in Asante Akyem North.
As of the time of reporting, Parliament has not officially declared the seat vacant, nor has any announcement been made regarding a possible by-election.
The matter continues to draw public attention as questions remain over the MP’s legal status and future in Parliament.
