An auntie at the Eid party I went to told me about Parveen Shakir, the iconic Pakistani poet. I was listening to her speak while working on a mix for @ajabtaal . @_shehaq ‘s recent EP features a beautiful rework of an @aroojaftab favourite — somehow, it all came together into this blend.
Parveen sadly passed away young in a tragic car crash. But her words live on — full of grace, continuing to inspire people like me.

Okay so my typewriter has a new ribbon and my written words are on substack as “Quill Mallick”.
I wanted to write a few pieces before is shared my account . I’ve got a couple of posts on my horror story attempt with Djinns, fan fiction of Batman in karachi and some personal psychiatry insights . Much as I have tried, I am unable to condense my thoughts into a 20 second reel so have returned to my original strength of writing .
I post new stuff every couple of weeks and I hope you not only check out current material on offer but also subscribe to this my substack as I’ll have new and hopefully interesting posts every couple of weeks .

First week in substance use psychiatry as a specialty registrar (a year away from being a consultant):-
Coming from olde age psychiatry in Westminster into an adult substance use service in Hounslow I thought the patient population would be the biggest difference - in terms of age and demographic….but the biggest difference I saw was in approach and intersection:
Approach- prescribing guidelines yes, but for once a guideline on how to safely STOP a substance - pharmaceutical or street drug.
Intersection - Criminal justice/ legal system in general. competitive funding of services. politics of centrally made policies vs the collision of culture and experience in a London borough . This must be what studying economics is like 😮
There’s a lot to learn, but perhaps the safest place to start (for a doctor atleast) is the science of it . After a point the exams DO stop for doctors and you have to kind of create your own syllabus of what you think you need to know to be clinically proficient in an unfamiliar setting .
