Nina Simone transcended genres and she often referred to her music as Black Classical Music - a name that reflected her unique fusion and interpretations of jazz, blues, gospel, pop, folk, and classical. Nina rejected the industry’s tendency to categorize her work merely as “jazz” or “soul,” and she opined that Black artists were often pigeonholed into these genres in a manner that was both limiting and marginalizing.
Until an ‘International Black Classical Music Day’ is (maybe one day!) established, we can celebrate Nina’s timeless contributions to the world of jazz on #jazzday with 20% off all music in the Nina Simone Store at the link in bio using code Spring20. Exclusions apply. #ninasimone
Pretty special to get asked to remix this!! I got the stems for a live version of Nina Simone’s Baltimore… wanted to give the vocal room to breathe while keeping it minimal and club ready… enjoy!!
“Baltimore” performed by Nina Simone in 1987 on the Àngel Casas Show, accompanied by Alvin Queen on drums.
Stay tuned tomorrow for a Baltimore remix from @supershy__ via @ververemixed ! #ninasimone #baltimore
BEHIND THE TRACK: Baltimore (photos by Robert Breck Chapman)
• Written by Randy Newman
• Originally released by Newman in 1977; Nina’s version released in 1978
• Newman’s original was a quiet meditation on urban decay and disillusionment
• Nina’s interpretation transformed it into a powerful justice cry for marginalized communities
Stay tuned this Friday for a Baltimore remix from @supershy__ via @ververemixed ! #ninasimone #baltimore
Nina Simone’s “Four Women” means a lot to me. When I was asked to remix it, I knew I wanted to go deeper than the music. To sit with what Nina was actually saying and ask what it still means today. The Fifth Woman is that conversation. We shot part of it at Thebe Magugu House and in the studio of Johannesburg artist Boemo Diale, whose work explores the same territory as the song, Black womanhood, memory, what gets passed down. For the women we come from and the girls we still carry. Out now on my YouTube channel.
