Two weeks on from its official press night in the #WestEnd, Nina Dunn, Video Designer for Avenue Q at the Shaftesbury Theatre, shares a behind-the-scenes look at the production:
"I first encountered Avenue Q on Broadway in 2008 and later via the V&A Museum's National Video Archive of Performance whilst working on an exhibit there. Joining the team to bring it back to the West End alongside original and new creative members is a true privilege.
I adore every character in this clever, deceptively complex show. The cast is exceptional and directed by Jason Moore they manage to find the perfect balance of heart and humor. It is a joy to hear the audience's laughter and gasps of support for the characters each night.
The music and writing feel fresh while honoring the original classic: the band is so brilliant I could listen to their sound check alone all evening.
Collaborating with Anna Louizos on her inventive set has been wonderful, especially finding new ways to integrate original animation and hidden video surfaces. My team at PixeLlux, working alongside lighting designer, Tim Lutkin, and sound designer, Paul Groothuis, has worked to re-format and expand the interstitial material and add more humour and richness to the show with new material.
With the original puppet designs sporting Jean Chan's ingenious new costume designs, it has been an honor to be part of the Avenue Q 'Class of 2026.'"

"Visually the production benefits enormously from the advances in theatre technology. Tim Lutkin’s lighting design and Nina Dunn’s video design are sleek, dynamic and beautifully integrated with Anna Louizos’s set design , giving the show a level of polish that redefines its aesthetic. It no longer trades on novelty; it stands confidently as a sophisticated piece of musical theatre."

“…given how many adult jokes can be found in video designer Nina Dunn’s cartoonish infomercials, I found myself scanning the many billboards seen in “There’s Life Outside Your Apartment” for hidden references instead of paying attention to the characters performing on stage.”

Living in Brighton, there’s a real risk of filling up photo a whole library with pictures of the sea: its constant shape shifting nature, affected by light, wind, tides and seasons means it’s never the same from one day to the next: from tranquil to terrifying in the space of a day.
Last night there was a crazy low tide that exposed the coastline’s hidden secret expanse of smooth sand under the dying light. Truly magical! ✨
It’s World Book Day and the team are deep in development for the brand new production of The Snowman based on Raymond Brigg’s classic illustrated book, which is coming to the@therepbirmingham and@peacocktheatre ’s later this year.
A few months ago the team spent a truly inspiring day at the Penguin archive, studying Raymond Brigg’s original drawings and sketches.
We are really excited about reimagining his detailed, atmospheric world for the stage using the latest digital means to integrate with set, dance and aerial work whilst remaining true to the beauty of the original’s hand drawn aesthetic.

On my trip to Birmingham Rep this week I saw lots of familiar faces and was reminded how lovely it is that all recent the shows are drawn on the walls of their green room.
I can't believe there are 6 shows created by my team in their hall of fame! Plus one to come very soon...
How nice to travel the country with work but somehow feel at home. Theatre communities are a wonderful thing!
PixelLux joined forces with #TAIT as their content and systems integration partner for their stand at #ise2026barcelona to demonstrate the ability of TAIT Navigator and Kinesys Apex hoist to integrate seamlessly, intuitively and creatively with a video playback system.
In collaboration with TAIT, and the wider creative team including OS Creative, LCR, and @production___box we explored a range of creative approaches to showcase this technology at its very best. Using Unreal Engine, Notch and Disguise we developed content that responds directly to the PsN data and the real-time positioning of the media display surface: in this case, a rotating and travelling 50” 4k TV that sits at the heart of the stand.
Alongside informative content showcasing @taittowers ’s world-class projects and products, we created playful sequences to really demonstrate what the system can do, including a @notchvfx scene where PsN data drives gravity and lighting and a duet between aerial dance footage and screen motion.
The creative possibilities for this system are endless and scalable - contact us to talk about your ideas and how we can make them a reality!
Check it out in person at #ise2026 , Hall 8.1 stand 8D900
