My Week 2 Gotalent Hunt task.
Cultural Portraits β Edo Heritage
βA celebration of tradition, pride, and artistry through the Edo cultural lens.β
For the GoTalent Hunt Week themed βCultural Portraits Photography,β I wanted to create something distinct and deeply rooted in tradition. At first, I felt uncertain about which cultural direction to take. Then it struck meβI have always admired the richness of the Edo culture, especially their regal wedding attire.
To bring this vision to life, I sourced authentic fabrics from a vendor and collaborated with a close friend who embraced the concept wholeheartedly. In the studio, every detail was intentional. Beyond attire, I introduced fresh flowers into the setβnot only to enrich the composition visually but also to symbolize the pride, beauty, and flourishing spirit of the Edo people.
My creative process was carefully curated: fabrics, accessories, colors, and symbolic elements were chosen to highlight elegance and cultural depth. The choice of warm, bold colors reflected strength and royalty, while post-production was handled delicately to preserve textures and authenticity.
The Edo people, historically known for their Kingdom of Benin, are celebrated for their artistry, bronze works, and vibrant traditions. Their wedding attire, adorned with coral beads and rich fabrics, symbolizes status, unity, and cultural pride. I wanted my portraits to capture this essenceβblending historical reverence with contemporary storytelling.
This project was not just about capturing portraits; it was about honoring a culture I admire and translating it into timeless imagery that speaks of tradition, pride, and creativity.
