Over the past 12 months, Iāve found myself in so many spaces centred around South Asian identity, culture, and representation and each time, Iāve been reflecting on what true inclusion within those spaces really looks like.
Something I keep wondering is this: do we naturally gravitate towards what feels most familiar people who share our exact background, language, or cultural experience?
And if so, what impact might that have on others in the room?
South Asia is beautifully diverse. My own friendship groups reflect that. I have Sinhalese and Tamil friends, Punjabi and Gujarati friends, Indian and Pakistani friends, Bengali, Malayaliā¦and beyond. That diversity has always felt like a strength.
But sometimes, in the spaces that are meant to celebrate ārepresentationā, Iāve quietly noticed how easily one can feel excluded.
As a mother to a daughter who is both Sri Lankan and Indian, I think a lot about the kind of spaces weāre creating for the next generation. I never want her to question whether she belongs because of which part of South Asia she comes from.
Maybe ārepresentationā isnāt just about being invited into the room; maybe itās also about how we make people feel once theyāre there.
Iām sharing this not as criticism, but as reflection. Because if our communities are advocating for visibility and inclusion, perhaps thereās also value in asking how we can show up for one another more openly.
Because being in the room should never be where the conversation ends. Thatās exactly where it should begin š
