Finally got up close with this little legend - the South Island tomtit (ngirungiru).
These native insect hunters are known for following people through the bush, catching small invertebrates disturbed along the way, a behaviour that’s made them one of the more approachable forest birds in Aotearoa. Males wear this striking yellow chest, while females are a softer brown (I post one a couple of weeks ago), making them a great example of sexual dimorphism in NZ birdlife.
