It’s National Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day. Today we pause to honor the men and women who serve communities across this country with courage and selflessness. We remember the officers who gave everything in service to others and recognize those who continue to stand the line each day.

Psalms 37:23-24 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand. This morning while reading, I took note of something I had never paid attention to before. We often quote verse 23 and stop. The next verse enlightens us about the good man, though he falls. “Good man” here means to be in good standing with God or a right relationship with Him. God will order or establish his steps.   It’s amazing how we sit and discuss the evils of every man, woman, boy, or girl who have ever fallen. Then we scratch our heads because they were not destroyed, abolished, or annihilated. Suddenly, we see them back on their feet. How could this be?   It is people who cast down, pulverize, stomp, kick, and try to destroy men and women who have had what we call failures in life. Matthew 5:45 reminds us God causes the sun to rise on the evil and the good, and it rains on the just and the unjust. Galatians 6:1 says, “Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.” In our discourse of discussion and casting down, we must consider who we are. No man is above stumbling, staggering, nor stalling. We are reminded in Proverbs 24:16, “For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.” When Peter asked to step out on the water and come to Jesus in Matthew 14:28, his steps were ordered. He simply took his eyes off of the Lord and looked at the waves. The difference in Peter making it back to the boat or drowning was the hand of Jesus.   Our prayer for you this week: May you come to realize the difference between you being cast down or upheld is where your hand is placed.

Matthew 8:31-32 So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine. And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.   It’s amazing how there is nothing new under the sun. Time after time, we circle back to events that while they involve new people, the events are the same setup, the same situation. Here in Matthew 8, Jesus is approached by two from the tombs full of devils, and they ask Jesus the same thing non-believers throw at believers still today. Have you come to torment us? Off in the distance was a herd of swine feeding, and the spirits besought Jesus, “If thou cast us out, suffer us to go into the herd of swine.” Scripture says when they entered the swine, they “ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.” I stand astonished how: 1. A human will invite in what a hog has to have permission from God to have inside of them.   2. A hog will not live with what a human will. It is interesting to me how an already unclean Hog was willing to run to the sea and die rather than to live being inhabited by unclean spirits. Yet, humanity will house unclean spirits, live unrepentant before God, and refuse the waters of baptism/watery grave.     Our prayer for you this week: May you come to realize how important repentance and being buried in baptism in the name of Jesus really is.

Matthew 18:2-4 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. These amazing words of our Master and Lord Jesusrecommend we take on the humility of a child. You can find these words in Mark 10:15 as well. Can we first take a look at humility? It is defined as the state or quality of being humble; freedom from pride and arrogance; lowliness of mind; a modest estimate of one’s own worth; a sense of one’s own unworthiness through imperfection and sinfulness; self-abasement; humbleness. It’s incredible how children have more integrity to God than we adults do. Think about a child and their ability to reach up, take their father or mother’s hand in the worst and/or best of times and follow knowing that Dad and Mom said all is going to be ok. They have an insane dynamic about them to carry on with their day as if there is no need to fear.   I drive for the local school system, and I see the resilience of children’s faith and humility on a daily basis. I have seen them come to the stops with their father’s shirts hanging off of themwhere they got up and readied themselves for the day.  Yet, when I open the door of the bus, they look up and greet me with a smile as to say everything is ok when I know how tough life is for them.     All God is asking us for is to reach up in humility, take Him by the hand, and trust Him and His word. Remember, He began this thing, and He will finish it. God knows how tough life is. Our prayer for you this week: May you humble yourself and come to trust Jesus and His word.
