Pelumi Nubi is the first Black woman in history to complete a solo road trip from London to Lagos , 10,000 kilometres across 17 countries in 68 days, a feat that drew international media coverage and placed her among a lineage of record-breaking transcontinental adventurers stretching back to 1966.
She is a Lagos-born, London-raised travel content creator and global speaker who completed the journey in April 2024 in a purple Peugeot 107, navigating the Sahara Desert, eleven land borders, a car crash in Côte d’Ivoire, and a two-night standoff at the Liberian border before arriving to a hero’s welcome at the University of Lagos. The Lagos State Government appointed her Tourism Ambassador and awarded her a house and a car in recognition of the achievement.
She has since hosted a ten-part travel series across The Gambia and Sierra Leone for Africell, shortlisted at the IndieLab Innovation Awards, and was invited to the World Governments Summit in Dubai as a featured creator alongside global names curated by Forbes. She has visited over 80 countries, published a children’s book inspired by her drive, and delivers keynote addresses for institutions across three continents.
Nigeria’s presence in global sports was hard to miss this week.
And interestingly, it wasn’t just athletes making headlines. Filmhouse also made history as the first African cinema company recognised on Boxoffice Pro’s global Blue Ribbon List.

He is a Nigerian-American singer, songwriter, and record producer who in 2023 became the first African artist to top the iTunes Album Chart globally, with his fourth studio album Timeless accumulating over one billion streams. That same album earned him three Grammy nominations at the 66th Grammy Awards for Best Global Music Album, Best Global Music Performance, and Best African Music Performance and he received a fourth Grammy nomination ahead of the 2026 ceremony for Best African Music Performance.
He closed the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a performance watched by over 250 million viewers, headlined Madison Square Garden in April 2024, and has sold out London’s O2 Arena on multiple occasions. Nigeria keeps showing up in unexpected places. Sometimes it’s tech. Sometimes it’s on tiktok. And other times, it’s a chessboard in the middle of Times Square, with Tunde Onakoya wearing his Yoruba fìlà (traditional cap) like it belongs there. The image is an iconic one that deserves enough spotlight.
In April 2024, Tunde broke the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon, playing for 60 straight hours in New York. In 2025, he returned and did 64 hours. But the record itself was a doorway to something more. Global attention became fuel for Chess in Slums Africa, the nonprofit he founded to teach chess to children in underserved communities like Makoko and Oshodi, helping them access education, confidence, and opportunities far beyond their postcodes.
Tunde’s story carries weight because it’s lived. He grew up with very little, found refuge and direction in chess, and chose to turn that refuge into a bridge for others. What he’s building is access and in doing so, he’s offering a version of Nigeria that is thoughtful, capable, quietly excellent, and focused on the long game.
This week, the rooms were different, but the same was the case.
Nigerians showed up in five different global arenas and won. From WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas to the TIME100 list, from Oslo’s labour movement stage to U.S. academic and military leadership circles.
Read all about it in this week’s edition of The Nigerian Narrative.
