A monumental installation ‘Doorway to Night’ frames the darkness of bereavement, the finality of death; the loss of someone meaningful; a parent, a mentor, a lover, a friend; it articulates the experience of suspension, of accepting transition; of reconciling strength and weakness, conception and dissolution, lamentation and joy, writes Ngahuia Te Awekotuku of Brett Graham’s new offering at Gow Langsford. It is a whare mate (house of mourning) an acknowledgment of the passing of loved ones. A special project, a cathartic project. Ngā mihi Brett for making time to view it and connect. And today as you all remember the passing of your dad a year ago this day.
The work is on display for another week at the Onehunga gallery. 💜🌊🙏🏻

Special evening tonight with our Taumata Mareikura tohunga weavers ropu talking about the a rare 18th-century pauku (Mãori war cloak) on loan for the next five years to Tamaki Paenga Hira. Alongside members of Taumata Märeikura and Rachel Barclay, Curator at the Oriental Museum, we heard the insights into its unique making knowledge and how embodied knowledge and looking/observing and seeing as a form of research will play a part in reviving this unique kakahu. The pauku is one of only six of its kind in the world, with this one being the only pauku back here in Aotearoa at present.
‘Te Reo o te Ao Tawhito: The Language of the Old’ is name of this kaupapa and it’s a language made anew with the research over the next five years to reveal its unique making knowledge facilitated by @teahomutungakore , Taumata Māreikura, @kahutoite and @aucklandmuseum . A pleasure to be part of it tonight! ⚡️✨🌙
