Really excited to be teaching my new eight week course DRAWING TO PAINTING at @fitzroypainting starting April 9th weekly from 2-5pm.
For beginners, or anyone interested in the rich cross-over between drawing and painting, this course explores foundational drawing techniques in charcoal, pencil and ink before introducing my favourite medium, gouache, to explore basic colour mixing and theory, paint application, brush handling, as well as controlling opacity, layering and blending.
We’ll also discuss the endless possibilities of drawing, and my particular passion, how a sketch can evolve into a painting. By looking at historical and contemporary artists, as well as completing exercises in composition, value and scale, in the last two weeks participants will be led through the process of transforming their own sketch or reference photo into a gouache painting.
There are still a few spots left if you would like to join. I will also be teaching a one day course INTRODUCTION TO GOUACHE on July 25th at @fitzroypainting if you would like to learn more about gouache.
This little monotype is also included in the ‘Women of the Badlands’ group exhibition at @montsalvatartscentre with @baldessinstudio
The opening was buzzing on Friday night, huge congratulations to curators @amandagrant_studio and @_eleanor_j_ for bringing together over sixty female artists from across Nillumbik!

‘Wooloweyah study’, 2026
Monotype

This study, part of an on-going series, is a technical exploration of the fluid brush and mark-making made possible when creating a monotype, a printmaking technique in which one unique state is pulled, capturing the spontaneous pooling of the water/pigment and the clarity of the brush strokes.

Exploring monotypes in gouache
Absolutely loving the crossover of painting and printmaking with monotypes (one-off unique state prints). Such a freedom in the mark-making, and I love how all the brush marks and details are translated in the print.
Thank you so much to @augustcarpenter for her printmaking expertise and guiding me through the process ❤️

It was such a thrill and privilege to teach in @lloydgodman greenhouse in October at @baldessinstudio 💚
What better place to spend a weekend drawing! So much great work came out of it, I loved watching the artists draw and create in amongst the bromeliads.
It has really fed my creative spirit and work back in my own studio, so grateful to everyone who came along, such a great group of artists.
I’ll be running this workshop again in April next year, can’t wait!

Nicole Bowller's 'Slow Looking — Drawing from Place' Plein Air Workshop was held at the studio recently, and what a weekend it was!
With six students in the exquisite and extraordinary greenhouse of the late Lloyd Godman, the weekend saw a series of fast and unusual drawing exercises as well as a suite of large scale collaborative drawings, which you can see us working on in this reel! We worked with pencil, graphite, ink and watercolour and Nicole awed us all with her technical knowledge, generosity and enthusiasm for the art of slowly looking and documenting our surrounds.
Nicole will be back next year to run this workshop again on the 25th & 26th of April 2026 — you can book in already online!

This set of works on paper, part of my larger series ‘Avant Gardener’, takes it’s title from the stunning lyrics/poetry of @emoryhall
While processing grief and loss as I created in the greenhouse of my late friend, the ecological artist @lloydgodman , I deeply pondered legacy - what do we each leave behind?
What a gift to the world to leave a garden, a living, breathing entity.
Lloyd’s greenhouse is such a special place, especially to draw, paint and be inspired in. And you can join me there this October!
I am thrilled to be running an immersive weekend drawing workshop at @baldessinstudio in the ethereal greenhouse of the late @lloydgodman
SLOW LOOKING – DRAWING FROM PLACE
A TWO-DAY ‘EN-PLEIN AIR’ WORKSHOP

Over the weekend we will build a rich set of personal recordings and observations and discuss the ways in which these can be used to create a body of work after the weekend.
I can’t wait!

I’ve been getting quite the workout pulling a series of reduction linocuts on the beautiful Albion Press at @baldessinstudio over the past few weeks.
I’m loving the immediacy of being able to test a multitude of colour combinations and compositions through the reduction linocut process, exploring the filtered light of the greenhouse contrasted with delicate lines of the Tillandsia.
These prints will be on display this weekend at @baldessinstudio as part of @ngvmelbourne #melbournedesignweek
Come and visit 10am - 5pm to see the studio in action with a series of talks and demonstrations across the weekend.
@leaflovinart and I will be working in @lloydgodman greenhouse, with an opening celebration in the greenhouse on Sat 24th at 4pm.
I will also be doing a demonstration pulling a number of prints from this series at 12noon on Sunday.
