Equally inspired by medieval bestiaries and observations of our damaged planet, A Bestiary of the Anthropocene is a compilation of hybrid creatures of our time. Designed as a field handbook, it aims at helping us observe, navigate, and orientate into the increasingly artificial fabric of the world.
Plastiglomerates, surveillance robot dogs, fordite, artificial grass, antenna trees, Sars-Covid-2, decapitated mountains, drone-fighting eagles, standardised bananas… each of these specimens are symptomatic of the rapidly transforming “post-natural” era we live in. Often without us even noticing them, these creatures exponentially spread and co-exist with us.
A Bestiary of the Anthropocene seeks to capture this precise moment when the biosphere and technosphere merge and mesh into one new hybrid body. What happens when technologies and their unintended consequences become so ubiquitous that it is difficult to define what is “natural” or not? What does it mean to live in a hybrid environment made of organic and synthetic matter? What new specimens are currently populating our planet at the beginning of the 21st century?

L’ouvrage se construit comme une réflexion épistémologique sur les formes sensibles d’écriture de la recherche à la croisée de l’art, du design, de l’anthropologie et de l’ergonomie, à partir de projets singuliers d’enquête-création. Comment agencer des perspectives sociales et des formes sensibles ? À quelles conditions l’hybridation des pratiques artistiques et scientifiques est-elle fructueuse ? Comment collectiviser des pratiques de recherche-création ? Comment permettent-elles d’explorer / documenter / restituer des mondes en reconfiguration ? Comment activer des rencontres, bifurcations, expériences inédites par la recherche-création ?
Pensé comme un manuel expérimental, ce livre active l’exploration de diverses manières de faire la recherche-création. L’ouvrage se clôt de manière ouverte par un abécédaire dont les termes invitent à effectuer des gestes, engager des protocoles et croiser des méthodes.

Une thèse qui cherche à faire bifurquer les pratiques de l’architecture, réimaginer de nouveaux modèles, une décarbonisation des imaginaires sur lesquels la modernité a été fondée, cette esthétique fossile. Axelle Grégoire prend le parti non d’une désertion de l’architecture, d’une fugue, mais d’une transformation de l’intérieur, en plaidant pour une réouverture de ces outils de représentation qui permettrait d’échapper à la tyrannie de la standardisation industrielle, aux stéréotypes charriés par les plateformes, les langues communicationnelles qui aboutissent à des monoformes pour reprendre le terme avancé par Peter Watkins . Infléchir les pensées de la conception en entrevoyant dans le dessin, un outil de libération.
