Jelly on the Motorway. 80 x 65cm. Acrylic & plywood on canvas.
Painted myself into a corner (again). Trying to prioritise total improvisation but finding it hard to live with the results sometimes. Consistency is boring. I kind of upended my practice to start trying to understand ‘painting’ but I’m still attached to collage. Working without computers is nice. Risk vs success. Do what I’m good at or do what I might get good at? Need to show work. Might need to start a substack.
Here’s the artwork (image 1) I made for @mrbongoworldwide new Record Club Vol. 8. Swipe for alternative versions I worked up.
I usually start by making loads of collages and then focusing in on a few that feel a bit more interesting before sending to Mr Bongo to choose a few options.
I’ve done one of these a year for the last 8 years and each time I really look forward to being allowed largely free rein to come up with something.
I’m also very lucky that they are into using spot colours too - so these should look poppin’ in yr local record store. I’m grateful to designer Rob and the repro team for helping work out spot colour mixing etc.
Thanks @ladyjanebongo for getting me to do this and for being so easy to work with :)
¡No pasarán!
Acrylic & plywood on canvas. 30 x 40cm. 2026
My work has branched off into two processes recently. Improvised collage-painting and machine-painting. They’re quite different approaches with quite different results. Both searching for something unexpected and a lack of control.
