@nickvantiem - Freddy in front of the Butchery, Nairobi 2025
“Whenever I travel somewhere new, especially to a place outside my own culture, I try to resist the easy narrative. I push myself to go beyond the postcard version of a city, to step past the borders of tourism and into the fragile, human spaces that reveal what a place truly is. For this story for Vogue Italia, commissioned by a Dutch airline, I ventured to Nairobi to explore the real meaning of travel, to delve into its culture and to question my own assumptions.
Together with local creative Kennedy Mirema, I created a visual essay about the creative underground, capturing the city’s essence through its people and communities. This photograph of Freddy was taken during my day spent with the creative collective 199xorg in Limuru, a small village outside Nairobi. We wandered the streets and mixed with the locals, and as night approached, we stopped at a butchery for fresh beef with ugali. When I saw Freddy standing there in his green shirt against a pink background, with a yellow glow coming from the windows and the twilight setting in, I decided to take my last photograph of the day. One fifteenth of a second later, I knew I had made my favourite image of the series.”
