Stones balancing — and a whole square holding its breath. Yesterday Nick Steur opened his Freeze series in Limassol: the audience offered stones, and Nick built from them compositions that looked almost impossible. If you missed it, you still have two chances to witness this quiet, hypnotic performance: 🌀 13 November — 14:00 🌀 14 November — 14:00 📍 Meeting point: University Square Free entry • Registration required (link in bio)

Nick Steur has landed in Cyprus — and is already out searching for the stone-performers for the next three days 🪨 From Kourion to Kouklia & Mamonia, he’s been wandering the island’s landscapes, handpicking each rock for his hypnotic performance Freeze. Soon, you’ll see them almost levitate — balanced only by patience, gravity, and focus. 📎 12–14 November, 14:00 📍 University Square Free attendance, registration required → link in bio Images by @max_resonance ~ Ο Nick Steur

NEXT @ Sismògraf CATALONIA + Bildstörung GERMANY. Check my website! CARE TO CARRY = workshop + walkshop + talkshop • 4 hours •  indoors + city centre •  Studies in East Africa suggest that a person can carry up to 20% of their body weight on their head without expending extra energy. In Care to Carry Steur extended his research on weight by carrying stones in various ways across the urban landscape. By eventually balancing stones on his head and intentionally destabilising himself, he discovered a new approach to practising mindfulness and balance amongst the chaos of the city. Now, it’s your turn! This 4-hour experience begins with an indoor workshop and then moves outdoors into the city centre, one of the most challenging environments for mindfulness. We’ll journey through the streets as a cohesive collective – like a flock of birds or a school of fish. Experience how the overwhelming stimuli of urban life can become an opportunity for sensory exploration, fostering a shared experience by carrying stones for one another. Take on this challenge, and let the ‘concrete jungle’ reveal itself in the most unexpected ways.

La Biennale Toulouse, FR. Together with art students, we created the biggest ORBIT installation yet: At the Théâtre de la Cité in Toulouse, I prepared two 60 kg marble stones to dance and collide with each other. With this weight and with the longest ropes thus far (14m), the stones moved gracefully and very slowly through the blacked-out ‘space’. The audience sat on pillows all around, to reflect on the choreography of two entities, bound to each other... moving through time. Two white marble stones dance toward their inevitable collision. Relationships between two bodies are not as complex as they seem; the law of attraction pulls them into their own orbits. When they draw too near, they become either one or push each other away. At times they move in perfect harmony and cheat time itself. Do we truly dance so differently from the stars? Most ‘single’ stars we see in the night sky are in fact two—or even more—celestial bodies orbiting one another… Due to our distance we can see only a single point of light, as if they were one. Yet, when we look closer we can observe multiple entities, bound and condemned to each other’s gravity. If we are indeed made of stardust, how else could we dance?

50 postal packages are ready! In April 2024, I spent a month along the river De Maas/La Meuse. The intention was to “simply” be by the river, treating it as an equal and artistic partner, without necessarily aiming for a concrete artistic outcome. I deliberately didn’t act on the ideas that emerged during that time. And yet, that restraint led to unexpected results, which I’m now excited to share, with huge thanks to @marijke_beckers ! FROZEN FLOW: Each postal package is an invitation: to place three of your wishes, needs, or ideas on ice, in your fridge. Freeze your three biggest dreams—or those small, persistent to-dos you keep postponing— for a little while, just to let them go and give them space. Only return to them when you're truly ready to carry them out… or ready to release them into another body of water entirely. Do you know someone who has walked or worked with the Maas? Please reach out—I’d love to connect with them. This Maaslab project was made possible with the support of: Marijke Beckers (design) / Innovatielabs #2 (funding) / Creative Industries Fund (funding) / SoAP Maastricht (funding & organisation) / TAAT (funding & organisation) ...and last but not least, the river Maas herself (flow). > La Meuse... BIG merci, to every-body of water!
