#WCW Her! 😘 💃🏿⚡️⚡️⚡️ @instagram just reminded me that today marked a decade for my very first @voguemagazine cover ( it’s her 2nd of many) shot in Paris for 2 days during Haute Couture week, even @tonnegood was telling me when she was showing us all the clothes that how lucky we were ( even for Vogue?) to be able to get all these beautiful pieces. It was also my very first time in Paris, the stuff fashion dreams are made of, they closed down @museepicassoparis to shoot Lupita next to Picasso artwork because she is art! 🖼️🧑🏿‍🎤 When I first started looking at fashion mags, Vogue covers were more close up beauty, kinda like old Allure covers, and usually shot by Avedon, then eventually switched to Steven Meisel and they cropped more three quarters for more fashion covers, and then sometimes it’s outside, etc. When I started, I assisted my boss on many Vogue covers and dreamt that one day hopefully I’ll get my own cover and 🤞🏽 - Hopefully it’s with a star who will be around a long time, and not another one of those forgettable, One and done ✔️ - Hopefully it’s a glamorous cover with whimsical and fantastical, timeless clothes ✔️ - Hopefully it takes me on magical locations✔️ ✈️ - Hopefully it’s with a respectable fashion director who’s extremely knowledgeable that I can learn from ( who’s also nice and chill and not gonna stress me out, life is too short) ✔️ - Hopefully it’s a studio cover ( technically it was in the museum) with gorgeous lighting ✔️ - Hopefully with dramatic make up that’s not too natural so I can actually showcase my craft ✔️ I know it’s A Lot to ask but can you believe we got all of that in this one cover. ✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️ Thanks to Lupita for taking us along, and big CONGRATS for just wrapping her @publictheaterny #Shakespeare in the Park “ Twelfth Night” this week, looking good with mustache and all. 🤣 🎭🙌 #LupitaNyongo #Vogue #VogueCovers #TonneGoodman #Paris #HauteCouture

@goldenglobes #AAPIheritageMonth #HFPA x @festivaldecannes Thank you the HFPA for this piece, love that the Golden Globes ran with the “ I always do my homework“ 📚✍🏽🥸it’s definitely a long running theme for my career, often I do so much homework not just about who I want to work with but it’s as important to know also who to avoid, which relationships not to pursue, etc, so u can leave doors open for the right fits, my Asian parents that told me to “ Get a Real Job ” when I first started doing this but I appreciate that and wouldn’t have it any other way, challenges and pressure to push against is good for you, my success came early ( Thanks to the iconic #Y2K teen queens. 💰 💰 💰 💰) because I did have a lot to prove to my Asian parents, Now even tho I have an American passport but my agents will tell you I’m always like, When I’m in America away from home, I really have no time to waste and they get it. ❤️🇹🇭 🇺🇸 ✈️ Discussing ageism, #AAPI #POC representations in fashion, beauty and Hollywood ( tho I always care more about global contexts and not just Hollywood ) Which #icons I’d get starstruck by, and that’s why I’d never pursue them because it’d be too intimidating ( tho I already got my selfie in Cannes with @rossydpalma and we are now friends on insta ) @gracejonesofficial , @aishwaryaraibachchan_arb , @gonglifanpage , they always inspired me , it’s about staying true to yourself in an industry that’s easy to lose yourself and the uniqueness you have to offer, it’s better to be 1 of 1, and the #longevity is where it’s at. My first major red carpet #AwardsSeason with @lupitanyongo when she was nominated for #GoldenGlobes in what is now iconic cinnabar red @ralphlauren cape gown and my first time working with the star of #KillersofTheFlowerMoon @lilygladstone at this year Cannes films festival, more on The HFPA link. 🇹🇭 🎬✨✨✨ Reppin’ AAPI Heritage month in my Asian inspired Mandarin collar @giorgioarmani pinstripes wool jacket. On my queue to rewatch again “ Fellini’s Satyricon “ ( 1969) 🎭 🎬✨✨✨ The film is also quite timely, masterfully exploring the moral decay and extreme decadence of the Neronian era, it serves as a grotesque, comedic mirror of a crumbling society - but a lot of it went over my head because I was too busy gawking at the makeup, hair, costumes, etc thd beauty and the grotesque 😍👹💄when I first saw it first year in college when first arrived in NYC in the 90s to study Environmental Design at Parsons, and was so lucky to have the coolest teacher @seeyourselfsensing who showed us this film in class, we were studying the spaces, the set designs as inspirations to our study, one of the most memorable is the #DonyaleLuna character in the film, Luna, the first black model on Vogue cover ( British ) she predated all the supermodels by 3 decades. The film is not historically strict, Fellini didn’t try to recreate Rome accurately- instead he turns it in to a dreamlike, fragmented version of Antiquity, Fellini cast Donyale Luna as Oenothea, the sorceress in “Satyricon” (1969) a surreal film loosely adapted from Petronius’s ancient Roman satire, depicting the debauchery and grotesque excess of Nero’s Rome through the episodic adventures of two young men. Donyale also starred in another stunning surreal fantasy drama Italian film, “ Salome,” as the title character, Salome, in a psychedelic retelling of the biblical story. #donyaleluna #mythology #moviemagic

@lupitanyongo in CHANEL Haute Couture, The Oscars, 2025 on behalf of @theacademy Best Animation nom “ The Wild Robot” Queen of the dual roles strikes again! 🎬💃🏿💃🏿 #ChristopherNolan confirmed this week that Lupita will take on the roles of the divine Helen of Troy, as well as her sister, Clytemnestra in the upcoming epic “ The Odyssey” this summer. Mythology around the world are fun to read because they have been retold, reinterpreted for generations and there are always so many different versions, subplots, as an artist, It’s very inspiring reading world mythology full of magic and fantasy, with gods & monsters, from the Norse to Asia to Africa,Turtle Island, Polynesia, etc before I started reading The Iliad, the Odyssey ( it’s weird when people got so Literal comparing the movie “ Troy” w Brad Pitt to the Odyssey story, because even tho it’s the same universe but “ Troy” would be the first chapter focusing on the final weeks of the Trojan war VS The Odyssey is an adventurous sequel tracking a soldier’s 10 years quest to return home. The myth of the birth of “Helen of Troy” with her father being king of the gods Zeus who shapeshifted in to a swan to mate with Helen’s mother, Queen Leda, who already got a human husband, Leda later laid eggs, from the one Zeus egg, Helen with her twin brother, Pollux ( this made them Demi-gods) her other siblings Clytemnestra and Castor hatched from another egg - with different human father so that made them regular mortals ( Mortal humans born from an egg but it’s “ Mythology” so just go with i! ✌🏽 🐣) “Leda & the Swan” subject inspired many great art from ancient time to the Renaissance, they did that stuff really well w the wind blowing on gauzy dresses, flowing tresses and dynamic movements, we’ve all seen those “classics” in museums, galleries around the world. I’ve been digging through some contemporary art on the subject and here are some of my favorites ( I didn’t know there was an artwork titled “ Billie Holiday as Leda and the Black Swan” from the 80s ❤️) #LupitaNyongo #TheOdyssey #HelenofTroy

#MCM The GOAT! ( crazy thing is, his company was also called GOAT LLC 💥💥💥 🥊) I’ve been thinking about #MuhammadAli and this iconic @esquire 1968 cover, photographed by Carl Fischer a lot, would love to get this vintage cover framed for my living room one day, the concept of shooting Ali for this image was inspired by the Christian Martyr, Saint Sebastian, and the famous artwork depicting him tied to a wooden pole with arrows piercing through his body. The legendary art director George Luis came up with the concept to also depicted Ali on the cover like a martyr getting punished as well, but by that point Ali was already converted to Islam, he changed his name from Cassius to the Muslim name, Muhammad, so he didn’t want to be depicted as a Christian Saint, But luckily they convinced him that the concept isn’t about religion, but about Martyrdom - Ali was being punished and prosecuted for standing by his beliefs and refusing the Vietnam war draft, after the shoot, Ali embraced the concept deeply, he even identified each arrow with political figures he believe were attaching him, including President Lyndon Johnson, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara. It’s weird when u see some celebrities claiming their ✌️🏻activism✌️🏻 is brave and for good causes ( other than self promos) your protests should not land you on any Best Dressed list or getting paid to wear stuff ( unless you're donating All of it without people calling u out) Imagine if we got Ali with Rolex or Piaget watch brand deal while protesting allover the news, or Rosa Parks for Bottega Veneta, etc that type of protests/activism just feel very Zoolander ( and bad advises) 🤷🏽‍♂️ 🇺🇸 #GOAT #hero

Happy #MothersDay 💄💋😎 Best Beauty Tips I Learned from My Mother & Her Beauty/Style Icons. 🎬♥️♥️♥️ My mother def taught me about beauty, style, watching old movies w her fave icons, Ingrid Bergman, Grace Kelly, Liz Taylor, etc + fashion mags she had around the house, her vanities filed with Dior, YSL, CHANEL, etc lipsticks that I played with ( and destroyed) The other VIP beauty icon for her was the late Queen Mother SiriKit of Thailand, esp in the 80s, 90s, she wore lotS of great lipsticks that matched her jewel tones Thai silk wardrobe. My mom showed me that u can wear bold lip colours w/o having the lipstick taking over your whole face and look harsh or severe, it can be soft and elegant, she also would changed the shades through out the day, cus’ Why Not? it could be a fuchsia YSL in the morning and then after lunch, when she had to reapplied, she would switched to a scarlet Chanel in the afternoon, or sometimes bold orange Tyen’s Dior then it ended up another fun colour, it’s fun to change. Here are some of the top 5 currently in her vanity 💼 💄💄💄💄💄 @armanibeauty Lip Power in 301, the perfect pop of Mandarin Orange 🍊orange is hard to pull off esp when too much yellow/not deep enough so it looks too neon and can lean cheap. @chanel.beauty 31 Le Rouge in Rouge Imaginaire, the perfect velvety bright red that will brighten up your face, reds that are too dark and too matte can be aging. My mom was looking for something softer than her usual bold shades but it has to still pop so she doesn’t feel washed out @lisaeldridgemakeup lipstick in Je Nais Sais Quoi is now one of her fave day time shade. @diorbeauty NEW Rouge Dior Backstage in 800 Red Charm, bright red with fresh sheen thats not too shiny, the new longwearing formula and skinny tube makes this easy to apply/wear all day. @yslbeauty made so many iconic fuchsia shades but unfortunately most are discontinued, hot pinks can look too plastic or too girly, the right fuchsia that leans a bit purple look more sophisticated and more luxe, I’m in love with the Rouge Sur Mesure Pink Trio to create variety of chic pinks. #beauty #glamour

Wealthy people wanting to seem relatable “ I’m just like you” and look “ Poorer” than they actually are is nothing new, we’ve seen it throughout history- not to mention, excess never looked cool, always too stuffy and contrived, in fashion, the coolest trends always come from the streets from real people with real styles and authenticity. It’s always the vibes/cool factors that wealthy people want, but you can’t really get them from buying ( or borrowing) expensive stuff. That time when Marie Antoinette got bored with excess, from OTT palace of Versailles, to her opulent wardrobe, she wanted to live in a little faux- rural “ farm house” retreat ( but without having actually to do the backbreaking labor of farmers, and with white gloves service maids and butlers) and started dressing in the style of “ Peasant chic” ( but Haute Couture version of course) this portrait by her favorite artist Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun was controversial, scandalous and revolutionary for the obvious reasons ( and in term of styles) because, a queen of France wearing a simple muslin dress ( completed with straws hat) romanticizing rural life, poverty, cosplaying shepherdess, instead of her usual luxe silk, brocades, etc, it got a lot of backlashes, they had to take this portrait down from the gallery. In today's internet age, she’d have been soft canceled for hypocrisy/ playing in people's faces and would probably have to turn off her comments for few weeks and pretend it didn't happened ( except we know it got worse from here) There were 3 Madame X this year at the MET Gala, I was kinda hoping someone would be bold enough to satire themselves by referencing Marie Antoinette in her “ But I’m so relatable” Peasant Chic era, but then again it might be a little much to be wealthy and referencing an icon that got her head chopped off from being overly extravagant. 😂😂😂 #Art #Style #vigeelebrun

#AAPI Heritage Month #SEAblings shared culture The #Kebaya 🇲🇾 🇮🇩 🇧🇳 🇸🇬 🇹🇭 On Dec 4, 2024, the Kebaya was officially inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This recognized traditional South East Asian front-opening blouse, often paired with a sarong, is the heritage shared by 5 nations, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and Thailand. In this hot climates, bare upper body was practical and quite the norms, stitched clothing, tunics, blouses etc came to us around 15th century with the spread of Islam ( the Malacca Sultanate )There are many variant of Kebaya, you often see them in lace, rich embroideries but they sometimes made of silk, velvet, brocade or cotton Batik like how my preferred airline @singaporeairid ( formerly joints with @malaysiaairlines ) got their uniforms updated by French designer Pierre Balmain since 1968 that's still in use today. There ‘s always the perfect Kebaya for everyone, like my Chinese grandma adopted by a Thai family, she married my Indonesian grandpa so she also adopted the Kebaya in to her wardrobe, you can be a Chinese Malay, a Hindu from Bali, a Buddhist from the South of Thailand, or a Muslim from Brunei- add matching hijabs, that's the beauty of the shared culture, I love seeing how people added their own spins and especially by fun, contemporary designers, at one point when the colonizers tried to construct the concept of race, they realised that people in SEA are different and shouldn't be put in their “ Asian” box, so they actually proposed another race “ The Malays” for us. 🤷🏽‍♂️ The world is currently burning with people fighting over culture, ownerships, nationalities, borders, etc mostly from the Colonial era, art, culture and food help you see the world through our ancestors lens, not the colonial lens, on the map, these places might look separate by borders and the vast ocean but our ancestors were definitely connected by the sea. 🌴⛵️🛶🚣🧜‍♀️ 🧜‍♂️ 🌊 #culture #AsianChic @asiasociety @unesco
