Spent the afternoon with my friend, the James Beard nominated Mona Holmes, editor at Eater Southern California/Southwest at the iconic Los Angeles landmark Grand Central Market to try all her favorite vendors and unsurprisingly everything hit! For the 9th Annual #BlackWomenInFoodAwards 🏆, we honored the leadership, innovation, and impact of Black women shaping the food, beverage, and hospitality industries during our #BWIFSummit Conference Day.
Hosted by @niasalterego , honorees were presented with our first-ever physical award — commemorative plates inspired by the legacy of Virginia Ali, the trailblazing co-founder of Ben’s Chili Bowl.
We were also thrilled and honored to welcome Virginia to the stage. At 92 years old, she shared her reflections with such sharpness and wit on opening Ben’s Chili Bowl in 1958, serving as a safe haven for the community through moments of joy and hardship.
It was only fitting to recognize a woman whose impact helped pave so many of the paths we walk today as we celebrated this year’s honorees.
Across 10 categories, including our first-ever Hospitality Maven distinction, this year’s class reflects the depth, brilliance, and range of our community. To every honoree: We see you. We celebrate you. We are better because of your work! 💜
