Coordinator Office of First Lady, Edo State Advocates Inclusion, Support for Persons Living With Autism
Persons living with autism possess unique abilities, talents, and potentials that can flourish when given the right support, acceptance, and opportunities. The Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, has admonished parents, guardians, caregivers, and members of the public to dedicate time, show love, and provide adequate care and support for persons living with autism.
She made this known during an Autism Awareness Programme themed, โAutism and Humanity: Every Life Has Value,โ held at the Emporium Event Center, JBS Estate, Benin City, Edo State.
Represented by the wife of the Secretary to the State Government, Hajia Nimata Ikhilor, Mrs. Anani emphasized the need for greater understanding, acceptance, and inclusion of persons living with autism in society. She noted that children with autism possess unique abilities and talents that can thrive in an enabling and supportive environment.
The Convener of the programme, Sandra Igene, stated that her passion for autism advocacy was inspired by the desire to celebrate and support children with special needs.
A lecture on โMental Health Implications and Recommendationsโ was delivered by a Resident Doctor from the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Benin City, Dr. Sunday Adekiya, represented by Dr. Julius Adeduntan.
He explained that autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that affects how individuals learn, communicate, and interact, stressing that autism should be seen as a natural variation in human cognition rather than an inherent defect.
A dietitian, Precious Aisosa Okonkwo (RDN), also delivered a lecture titled โAutism Nutrition: The Role of Diet in Promoting Inclusiveness.โ She noted that children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often experience feeding difficulties and emphasized the importance of healthy nutrition, particularly natural fruits and balanced diets, in helping to regulate mood, behaviour, and overall wellbeing.
