📚✨ This Place Kills Me ✨📚
We follow Abby, a girl trying to survive life at her new school - Wilberton Academy, an all-girls school where she definitely isn’t the most liked person around. Still, despite everything, she keeps trying to do what’s right.
As the story unfolds, we slowly learn more about Abby’s past, why she had to change schools, and the way people around her treat her sexuality as if it were “a medical condition” - something even reinforced by a teacher. Which is honestly heartbreaking… and absolutely NOT okay.
What I really appreciated about this comic is how clearly it says: people deserve understanding, respect, and proper education. That message should never be controversial.
This story also touches on a lot of heavy but important topics:
- drugs
- abusive / inappropriate relationships
- religion influencing people’s perceptions
- bullying & isolation
And can we talk about the art style??? I absolutely loved the illustrations by Nicole Goux ( @ngoux ) - they fit the mood of the story perfectly.
Huge appreciation as well to Mariko Tamaki ( @marikotamaki ) for creating such a thoughtful and meaningful story. 🩷
Also… random but IMPORTANT:
the paper quality in this edition??? AMAZING.
Maybe that only matters to me, but the reading experience was ✨immaculate✨
