I’m very honoured to also be nominated for Best Cinematography for There Are No Words! With the ever-solid creative support from the @onf_nfb and @minsooklee ’s expansive vision, I and the other cinematographers got to work in multiple media to create a visually diverse visual language for this film. To channel the spectral presence Min Sook wanted, I with ACs Elena Emer and JW Noh in Korea devised of a rig that allowed me to float with a Super 8 camera mounted to a Ronin RS3 Pro while being able to monitor with an iPhone at the same time. It takes very precise rigging and some patience but it worked. There are probably better ways of doing this but this is all I could think of at the time. The results, along with other effects in-camera and in post are used throughout the film. Congrats again to additional cinematographers and ACs! WE DEMAND! On this day, August 28th, in 1971 the first large scale rally for LGBT rights happened in Ottawa. Organized by Toronto Gay Action, LGBT activists created the We Demand document to call for 10 changes to the Canadian legal system that discriminated against the LGBT community. Among them the demand for amendments to remove discriminatory language from the Criminal Code, end discriminatory policies by the federal government that purged employees based on their sexual orientation and the removal of the immigration ban on gay men from immigrating to Canada. ‘ We Demand’ was a step forward and towards liberation but years of activism, advocacy and queer resistance on the streets would continue. Sabrina Budiman’s storytelling ability is unparalleled. She expertly transformed hours of footage into a narrative brimming with emotion, excitement, and seamless flow. By taking the time to fully grasp the essence of Serve, Marley, SK, and their community, she infused each cut with depth and care. Despite the overwhelming amount of footage, each choice was made with purpose.
