If you're heading to the beach this summer, be aware: Warmer waters have sharks changing up their migration routes, increasing the potential risks for humans. Dr. Chris Lowe, a marine biologist and director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach, said, “Because of the marine heat wave off California, we started seeing baby white sharks as early as February.” That’s the earliest he’s ever seen them. Lowe said sharks seek out warmer waters to have their babies. "As long as there's lots of food, they can grow faster,” he said. “So what that does is that puts a lot more baby sharks close to the beaches where all the people are." And with forecasters predicting a strong El Nino — a climate pattern marked by unusually warm temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean — experts say that could potentially push sharks into places we don't typically see them. Experts say anyone with concerns should talk to a lifeguard to understand the current conditions before going out in the water. Still, researchers say the chance of getting bitten by a shark remains extremely low and that sharks aren't looking to attack humans — it’s often a case of mistaken identity. So avoid water activities during dawn and dusk, experts say. #Florida #Sharks #SharkSeason #beachsafety #FloridaBeaches
