#FunFact: Did you know about Robert Owen's Silent Monitor?
At New Lanark, Robert Owen introduced a unique system of discipline and self-improvement.
Each worker had a wooden block, or monitor, displayed at their workstation, with different coloured sides indicating their conduct from bad to excellent.
This innovative, non-verbal feedback system encouraged workers to reflect on their behaviour and strive for improvement. A fascinating glimpse into early social reform! #RobertOwen #SocialReform #HistoryFacts #IndustrialRevolution #NewLanarkHistory #DidYouKnow

🗓On this day, 14th May 1771, Robert Owen was born in a small Welsh town, the son of a saddler and ironmonger, with no obvious path to becoming one of the most influential social reformers of the industrial age...
By his early teens, he’d already left home to work in the textile trade, and by 19 he was managing a large mill in Manchester. He’d seen firsthand the harsh realities of industrial life- long hours, child labour, poor living conditions- and he believed there had to be a better way.
That belief brought him to New Lanark in 1799, when he took over the mills from his father-in-law, David Dale. But Owen didn’t just run New Lanark, he reimagined it.
Right here, by the Falls of Clyde, he put his “New View of Society” into action. He reduced working hours, refused to employ very young children, and invested in the wellbeing of the community in ways that were revolutionary for the time.
At New Lanark, he introduced:
🎓 The world’s first infant school
👛 The first cooperative store
📚 Progressive factory form
👩⚕️ Cleaner housing and subsidised healthcare
Today, as you walk through the village, explore the historic buildings, and stand by the rushing waters of the Clyde, you’re experiencing the very place where these ideas first took shape. These ideas would go on to influence social reform movements around the world.
Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, New Lanark showcases Owen’s belief that industry and humanity can go hand in hand. 255 years on, his legacy is still part of the story we share every day.🎂
As Owen himself put it:
“There is but one mode by which man can possess in perpetuity all the happiness which his nature is capable of enjoying — that is by the union and co-operation of all for the benefit of each.”

In the past, these key belonged to David Dale. The other opened the doors to the Institute for the Formation of Character. 🗝 Can you imagine David Dale walking back to his home in the evening and turning the key in the lock? Or a teacher opening up the doors for Villagers for an evening concert?
