How can we prevent plastic waste from reaching the sea? UCL Ocean Health Challenge invited students across the country to put their problem-solving skills, critical thinking and scientific knowledge to the test and design practical solutions to a real-world issue. Over 3,000 students took part in the Challenge and we're proud that Youssef, an A Level Biology, Chemistry and Maths student at NewVIc Sixth Form Centre, part of Newham College London, was announced runner up in the Key Stage 5 category! He designed a microplastic water filter with a great prototype which utilised 3D printing. Read on https://ow.ly/m82f50Yo6zV Inspirational work Youssef! 🌊🙌

We’re taking a moment to look back at the Foundation Learning Performing Arts Group’s end-of-term Spring Showcase – and what an incredible event it was! 🌟 Last term, the group focused on developing their musical skills and brought their learning to life by performing to a full house in the theatre. They showcased a range of original pieces spanning genres from performance poetry to rap and piano. There were many standout moments throughout the event. A special mention goes to Tharif, who performed Let It Go on the piano, accompanied by Junior, Roland and Learning Support Practitioner Nordia. Tharif played the piece using his phone rather than standard notation, demonstrating his amazing visual mathematical ability. In spoken word, Josiah delivered a moving original poem, Wavy Waterfalls, with a message about hope. Junior impressed the audience with his vocal talent in a rap performance of The Evidence, followed by Yahye’s rendition of God’s Plan. The showcase concluded with a grand finale - a collaborative piece where each student contributed a verse about what gave them the blues. Performed beautifully without a backing track, it was a powerful ending. Adrian Bond, the groups tutor, commented: “I attended all the rehearsals, but when it came to the final event, they were able to run most of the show independently. They were so confident, they didn’t need me!” A huge thank you to the Performing Arts Group for sharing your musical learning journey with us - you smashed it! Thanks also to the students from Barking & Dagenham College, who expertly managed the stage lighting which elevated the performance visually. 🙌 #SEND #music #wearenewhamcollegelondon

Last term, students from across a wide range of courses took part in this year’s LRC Reading Challenge, celebrating their achievements in style at an awards event held last week. Special prizes were awarded to recognise outstanding effort, including students who completed multiple reading diaries and those who made strong progress in developing their reading skills. Foundation Learning students enthusiastically embraced the challenge, demonstrating real commitment and growth. Reflecting on her experience, student Hibba said: “I enjoyed listening to books. It’s really helped my confidence and communication skills. Taking part in the challenge also reminded me how nice it is to pick up a book.” Another student, Isabelle, added: “The challenge made me prioritise reading more. It encouraged me to reflect on what I enjoyed reading, what I didn’t, and why.” Sharon Townsend, Head of LRC and Libraries, Newham College London, said: “Well done to everyone who took part in this year’s LRC Reading Challenge. I hope you’ve enjoyed your reading journey – remember, it’s not just about improving reading, but also about developing your vocabulary. Thank you to all the teachers who supported the challenge too. And most importantly – keep reading!” #NationalYearOfReading #GoAllIn2026 #LoveOurLibraries #WeAreNewhamCollegeLondon

NewVIc Sixth Form Centre was bursting with colour last week as part of Newham College London’s vibrant Culture Day celebrations! Wearing traditional dress and country flags, students took to the stage and photobooth to proudly showcase their heritage, competing in a ‘Best Dressed’ competition. Through language, music and fashion, students and staff learnt from each other about world cultures, reinforcing a powerful message - cultural diversity is a strength. Foundation Learning students brought a carnival atmosphere and sunshine to the day with a fantastic drumming performance, led by their tutor, AdrianđŸ„đŸŽ‰ The celebrations wrapped up with an open‑mic session, as students shared their vocal and musical talents on the main stage. Katie Harris, Student Enrichment and Sport Manager said, “Culture Day is always a highlight of the week. Students played a key role in making it such a success - from promoting the event to getting involved on the day - making it an enjoyable experience for both students and staff.” #CultureDay #CelebratingDiversity #WeAreNewhamCollegeLondon

Four special visitors arrived on campus today just in time for our Earth Day pop‑up event today! 😊 Green spaces at NewVIc Sixth Form Centre, including a pond in the staff garden, play a vital role in supporting biodiversity and over the past few months, our returning ‘resident’ duck has made the garden her home again – and it's become a safe haven for her ducklings 🩆💚 #EarthDay#CNGW2026 #Biodiversity

Today we were delighted to host our first ever Earth Day Pop Up event, in partnership with Bywaters. It was great to see both students and staff coming together to discuss the importance of Earth Day and the practical steps we can all take to reduce our impact on the planet. There were a mix of activities on offer; from a book swap organised by the LRC, a smoothie bike powered by kinetic energy to a plant giveaway and a sustainability-focused quiz. Ajala, Environmental Sustainability Manager, Newham College London, said, “It’s important to get our college community talking about what we can do individually, and collectively to reduce what we are consuming to protect the planet. I hope students will reflect on what they have learnt and continue these conversations with friends and family." A big thank you to Ajala for organising the event and to Bywaters for their supporting in making it happen. #EarthDay#CNGW2026 #Sustainability
