BOOK N°10 THE PAST EXISTS Kenta Cobayashi 小林健太 297mm x 210mm Laser Print Softcover 92 pages 2022 ¥3,300 (Japan) 35USD (The rest of the world) THE PAST EXISTS is a collection of works presented at Kenta Cobayashi’s solo exhibition at MITSUKOSHI CONTEMPORARY GALLERY in June 2022. In this exhibition, he selected portraits from “EVERYTHING” series of photographs. Cobayashi describes the past as a kind of frame that constantly transforms according to the angle and quality of the memories that one looks back on. Photographs are always a reflection of past time, but editing the images and determining the layout of the exhibition is a variation on that point in time and a search for an expression that is appropriate to his current self. He also says that these works are like a parting gift to his twenties, and that they are a final farewell to a stage that will never be performed again. In this book, Cobayashi expresses the accumulation of time from the past to the present by using the layering function of PHOTOSHOP, which is indispensable in his production process, to create a layout in which the layers of photographs overlap each other as the pages are turned. In the form of a book, we practice a way of being in which each time is connected and a non-uniform image emerges. 『THE PAST EXISTS』は2022年6月にMITSUKOSHI CONTEMPORARY GALLERYで開催された小林健太の個展にて発表された作品群をまとめた作品集です。同展覧会で小林はこれまで『EVERYTHING』シリーズで発表してきた写真の中からポートレイトを中心に選び展示しました。 過去について、小林は記憶を振り返る際の角度や質によって常に変形し続けるフレームのようなものと語っています。写真は常に過去の時間を写したものですが、そこに画像編集を施し展示レイアウトを決定していくことはその時点での変化のバリエーションであり、現在の自身にふさわしい表現の探求でもあります。また、これらの作品群は自身の20代への餞別のようなものであり、二度と再演されることのない舞台への名残惜しさであるとも語っています。 本書ではそのような過去から現在へとつながる時間の積み重ねを、小林の制作過程において欠かすことができないPHOTOSHOPのレイヤー機能を援用し、ページをめくるごとに写真の層が重なっていくレイアウトで表現しました。それぞれの時間が結びつき一様ではないイメージが立ち上がる在り方を、本という形式の中で試みています。 /thepastexists-kentacobayashi

Posted @withregram • @hiroyuki_kishida700 words for photography book, postcard / 2021 / Newfave テキストブック2冊とポストカード9枚を、封筒型フォルダに収めた『words for photography by Culture Centre』をデザインしました。表紙は梱包用テープを制作し、1冊ずつ違う表紙になっています。ポストカードの写真は、池崎一世（@ichiyoikezaki ）、佐藤麻優子（@mayukosato ）、築山礁太（@shota_tsukiyama ）。Newfave（@newfave ）からTABF2021に合わせて出版されました。 また、2月4（金）から20日（日）まで開催されている、第14回恵比寿映像祭のサテライトイベントとしてNADiff a/p/a/r/t（@nadiff_apart_ ）でも販売していますので是非！ 以下、Newfaveのウェブサイトより引用（/wordsforphotography-culturecentre/） “words for photography”は写真家を中心としたコレクティブ Culture Centreによる写真についてのテキストブックと、写真のポストカードによって構成されています。 テキストは2020年12月から2021年3月までの期間に、池崎一世、宇田川直宏、佐藤麻優子、築山翔太、中野泰輔、細倉真弓、吉田和生、Ryu Ikaの8名の写真家によって執筆されました。ルールは写真についてのテキストであること、リレーによって前者の内容を加味しながら書くこと。文章の形式は自由です。写真家が自作について語る機会はありますが、写真そのものについて言及された言葉は多くありません。また、公開する段階で匿名とすることにより、コレクティブであるCulture Centreの総体として同時代の無意識が浮かび上がることを狙いとしています。 二周に渡って出来上がったテキストから「私写真」というキーワードがメンバー間で議論されることがありました。「私写真」は文学における「私小説」を踏まえた日本独自の写真の形式と言われています。執筆した写真家たちの現在の作風は必ずしも「私写真」に該当しませんが、それは写真を扱う上での思想や身振りのなかに浸透しているのかもしれません。 ポストカードに掲載された写真は池崎一世、佐藤麻優子、築山翔太の3名の写真家によるものです。これらの写真は前述のテキストからのインスピレーションによって制作されました。全体のデザインは「私的」というキーワードから、手紙、贈る、ピンナップ、飾るといった写真にまつわる行為を連想させるものとして統一しています。グラフィックデザインは岸田紘之が手掛けました。 Page: 60(book1), 36(book2) / Print: Offset+Letterpress+on-demand / Color: 4C+VIVA350 ─ 写真は、宇田川さんとイカちゃんとワイワイしながら撮影しました。ありがとうございました。
