2024 marked the 80th birthday year of the German composer Matthias Spahlinger. To celebrate, neuMERZ resurrected Spahlinger’s masterwork Über den frühen Tod des Fräuleins Anna Augusta Markgräfin zu Baden, presenting the first performances of the piece in Europe since the its premiere some thirty years ago. PRO DEFUNCTIS brought together the American vocal ensemble @ekmelesvocalensemble with @ensembleaventure and the Composers Slide Quartet to tour Spahlinger’s music alongside connected works from Johannes Ockeghem and the young Greek composer Petros Leivadas. Three concerts were presented in Cologne, Stuttgart and Freiburg im Breisgau, with both Leivadas and Spahlinger in attendance.

If you are a sound explorer, an aspiring ethnomusicologist, or an enthusiast, neuMERZ invites you to discover a new side of Vietnam, inviting three artists who have all passed through the city of Hannover to reunite for an evening of traditional music and experimentation.
Join us for a special concert featuring three Vietnamese composers and improvisers: Tam Thi Pham, Ngo Tra My, and Ha Thuy Hang. All three artists root their artistic careers in the rich traditions of Vietnam.
Ngo Tra My is one of the most important players of Dan Bau of her generation, performing in more than 40 countries and being the recipient of numerous compositions for her instrument, being awarded the highest honours in her country and praised internationally.
Ha Thuy Hang works with sound as well as images, movies, objects, installations, taking inspiration from the chaotic duality of modern Vietnam, his capital Hanoi, and the developing provinces: torn between timeless traditions and chaotic development, her works are regarded as sensible and powerful.
Tam Thi Pham, multimedia composer and improviser also with an incredibly variety of output, is an established composer and a rising figure in the free improvisation scene. Based in Hamburg, where she teaches Dan Bau in the HfMT, she places her traditional music and instrument within the panorama of experimental improvisation.
Three performances, showing a part of their current artistic practices and individual journeys, present a diorama of the contemporary music scene in Vietnam.
