Released on May 16, 1986, Tony Scott’s Top Gun turned Tom Cruise into a global superstar, gave Val Kilmer one of the coolest rival roles of the decade as Iceman, and made the Maverick vs. Iceman dynamic one of the most iconic rivalries in action movie history.
From “I feel the need… the need for speed” to “Talk to me, Goose,” Top Gun became more than a movie. It became a full-blown pop culture force with unforgettable lines, legendary scenes, a massive soundtrack, and some of the coolest aerial action ever put on screen.
The film followed student pilots at the United States Navy’s elite fighter weapons school, where Maverick’s reckless instinct clashed with Iceman’s cold precision.
