A few years ago, I had the privilege of co-producing and directing an episode of Lidia Celebrates America with Lidia Bastianich and her guest, Anna Deavere Smith. We headed to Galveston, Texas, to learn about a yearly celebration we knew very little about: Juneteenth — a celebration born not of ceremony, but of justice delayed. Has it finally arrived? When exactly is the TEENTH of June?
Now, I had always prided myself on believing “We the People” meant all of us, regardless of class, color, sex, or orientation. But working on this segment pushed me profoundly further. It woke me up. If I did my job properly, it will have the same effect on you.
My short animated film, Is Joe Home?, will be screening in the Short Film Competition at the Oscar Qualifying St. Louis Film Festival on Nov 10th at 1pm. If any friends in the neighborhood wanna come show the love, I'll be there with the film's writer, Joel Ramirez. This is the 20-second trailer to the 4-minute film.
Marjorie McGuirk is a retired civil servant who worked for NOAA. Her perspective is important not only in terms of the storms hitting us but also of our political storm. Here's my latest with the Harris Content Brigade. Please share if you like.
MEAN (with apologies to Taylor Swift).
This is the second Video I made for the Harris Content Brigade. Watch with the sound on. All the individual elements of this animation (hair, a bald head, a blue suit, a bar, a barstool, etc.) were generated with Photoshop AI.
You know when a review mentions a "sequence," it's talking about the editing. This is from the NY Times: "the most illuminating element of “Happy Clothes” is a sequence in which her taste now is linked to her history as a central figure in New York’s underground culture of the 1970s and 1980s. Former employees and customers attest to what it meant to have a place — her store — where they could be unapologetically queer or trans or just interested in fashion, where they didn’t have to hide their identities. Field was ahead of her time in more ways than one, and this history suggests that she has been practicing an exuberant joy her whole career. That, “Happy Clothes” says, is her real legacy."
See it at the IFC Center, playing all this week. Also streaming.
