A fight is not about the punches.
For me the key layer is the one you don’t immediately notice - the reaction of the environment.
This breakdown starts with cloth movement, then voice, then punches. And then the environment. You can listen to it separately from the rest of the sounds in the 4rth video. Metal elements of the bridge start to respond to action. Rattles, structural movement, tension. I always pay a special attention to such details
Without this layer, the fight feels functional.
With it, the space becomes unstable, dangerous, threatening, adding anxiety and depth. That’s where sound design starts behaving like music.
Sometimes the emotional weight comes from layers that are barely noticeable on their own.

Most real-life impacts sound surprisingly weak. In this shot, the original fall is just a small hit which doesn’t carry the weight and pain you expect when you see it. So I start building it up with sound design. Add a heavier impact, some low-end, bits of debris, air movement... until it actually feels like it hurts.
