On Saturday, we headed to #Richmond to celebrate Head Winemaker Emily Hodson, where she was awarded the sixth annual Joe Formica Award from the @rvawinesociety ! Joe Formica, a founding member of the capital’s educational group, was an army veteran who later studied microbiology at @syracuseu and @georgetownuniversity . Joe found his love for wine during his 1974 sabbatical in California wine country, and upon returning to the Richmond area, he began teaching a wine appreciation course through @vcu . He went on to become a Master Wine Taster while creating The Wine School in Carytown and teaching another wine appreciation course through the local community college. Joe published several papers on the chemical properties of wine, combining his two passions. He instilled in his students and friends a passion for food, wine, and travel. This award was created in his honor following his death in 2020. Emily didn’t personally know Joe, but we’re pretty sure that, with their love of chemistry and wine, they would’ve been fast friends. Thank you to the Richmond Wine Society for hosting such a wonderful and lovely evening and for honoring Emily with this prestigious award, which now sits proudly in our Tasting Room! #winemaker #awardwinning #womeninwine #winelover
