🎧 Last Few Places Left – Don’t Miss This Unique Summer Field Trip! 🌿
Join us for an unforgettable afternoon of sound, nature, and creativity on 12 July, 13:00–16:00, as we journey from MIMA to Cowpen Bewley Woodland Park for a special field trip with sound artist Nell Catchpole.
This immersive workshop is part of Nell’s ongoing project, Gongs of Teesside, and is inspired by The Secret Lives of Bottle of Notes exhibition at MIMA. You’ll explore the landscape through Deep Listening, gong playing, and sound-making activities, all captured through handheld audio recorders.
📸 The project, beautifully documented by photographer Rachel Deakin, uncovers the natural, social, and political layers of place through sound. You’ll be invited into Nell’s artistic process, using specially forged gongs to create resonant soundings in the environment.

Join us for a summer field trip from MIMA to Cowpen Bewley Woodland Park on 12 July, 13:00–16:00. Explore the site through immersive listening and sound-making activities.
This workshop extends Nell Catchpole’s Gongs of Teesside, a two-year project captured by photographer Rachel Deakin, which delves into the natural, social and political layers of place through sound. Organised around The Secret Lives of Bottle of Notes exhibition at MIMA, the trip invites you into Nell’s artistic process - using specially forged gongs to create soundings in the landscape.
Activities include guided walking and Deep Listening, using handheld audio recorders, gong playing, and space for spoken reflections. The session concludes with a group debrief on listening as a way of knowing.

Gongs of Teesside continues - there are a few special people responsible for the crafting and knowledge that has made this next prototype possible. When the time is right they will be duly credited and acknowledged…For now, I thank them deeply - they know who they are! I am VERY excited with this development…. And the thought of steel gongs sounding in the valley of the Tees
Transported by @nellcatchpole is a set of sound installations in different sites around Middlesbrough Railway Station, focusing on the inter-connections between people and place for #MostCreativeStation
As our artist in residence, Nell is involving station staff, local creatives, rail interest groups, and the travelling public in recording stories, messages and soundscapes. New audio pieces composed from these recordings are being added throughout the residency.
All passengers are invited to leave a message for other travellers using the Freephone number 0800 193 7456.
Transported responds to the rhythms of rail travel: the ‘empty’ waiting time becomes an invitation to listen and transform your experience of the station by connecting with its hidden stories and meanings.
The sound pieces can be heard through movement activated ultrasonic speakers on Platform 1 & 2, the headphones in the Platform 1 Waiting Room, and the Freephone numbers. Golden ears and floor graphics indicate the location of the works.
Usually found creating sound art in the landscape, Nell’s creative process evolves in response to the specific people and place she is working in. Through taking time to listen, new knowledge and understandings of people and place emerge. Nell seeks to actively engage the listener, shifting them into a heightened state of awareness. She is interested in how this can allow the listener to imagine other possible worlds and ways of being.
