Coppermine River - July 23 to August 3

I do have a few more Coppermine shots on a roll that’s still in a camera, but these two rolls are pretty much the last of my Coppermine film.

I think I finally figured out my development issues that caused magenta streaks on C41. Just needed a vinegar stop.
.
Six of us paddled the Coppermine River from the Fairy Lake River confluence to Kugluktuk. The Coppermine - like the Hayes we paddled last year - is an extremely important historic river. Both in the real history of the land and people, and the more recent colonial name scrawling. Paddling an historic river for recreation is odd. It sets up expectations. Not sure what I expected, but the whitewater was much more fun than I expected.

And being my first trip in the Arctic Circle, there was much more swimming than I expected.

I shot mostly colour on the trip. It just didn’t seem like the river would be captured well in B&W. Pf the four rolls I developed, this B&W is my favourite. Surprising since I got my film types mixed up (I thought Flic Film Ultrapan was Kodak TMax stock) and underdeveloped the roll.

Round 2: bleach bypassed Flic Film Elektra in an FM2n

In May, while Manitoba was on fire, we paddled the Jimmy Kash River that flows into the Dog above Denison Falls. We left anxiety and stress from the fires behind, drove a full day to Manitouwadge, then spend a full day portaging (and shuttling).
.
Over the next two days, we paddled the small Jimmy Kash River from its headwaters, into the Dog, then into Superior. Because of the forecast, we pushed our two day Lake Superior paddle into one very hard day, then a full day drive back to Manitoba.
.
The Jimmy Kash had four rope descent portages, and Denison Falls required another two. This trip was a workout.

Easter weekend @kylekushnier convinced us to pack for a four day Black R trip, and see if the river was liquid by the time we got there. It had just opened up. It was a cold trip, but it turned out to be one last look at the river, for us, before fire ripped through. It’s still burning right now. Yes, it’s exciting to see the forest hit reset. This year though, fires have burned too large and too fast. Hoping the Nopiming caribou survived.

Black River mystery tour. We had no idea if the river would be frozen or not. Packed our bags and headed for the river. It was open but low. Snowed all day on day 1 and temps dropped to -6. Lots of dragging across lake ice. Warmed up a little day two. Got overheated and sunburned days 3 and 4. Incredible trip with incredible folk.
