We are so excited to announce the debut solo exhibition of our 2023 first artist in residency @ulonka_space . Akụ-luo-ụnọ, an exhibition by Nduka Ikechukwu (@nduka_ike ), explores the Igbo ideology of shared knowledge, collective growth, and cultural regeneration. Inspired by traditional concepts such as the Ogbuefi, Akụ-luo-ụnọ, and Igba Bọị– Nduka examines themes of power, economic resilience, and the politics of trade and commerce in southeastern Nigeria. Through his method of stitching and weaving industrial strap belts—materials that symbolize labor and endurance—he creates organic forms that speak to heritage, history, and the potential for transformation in the present. The exhibition reflects the values of the Igbo apprenticeship system, which is grounded in mentorship and communal support, and encourages a return to a morally conscious and interconnected society in the face of declining collective values. The concept of Akụ-luo-ụnọ addresses current societal challenges by promoting mentorship, the sharing of knowledge, and the upliftment of community. Rooted in the tradition of returning to one’s community to support others after achieving personal success, it offers an alternative to growing individualism, self-interest, and systemic inequality. In a time of increasing social disconnection, Akuluono proposes a model for sustainable development that emphasizes cooperation and investment in human potential. This approach aligns with sociological perspectives that view structural change and collective action as key to addressing issues such as poverty, unemployment, and social fragmentation. Wunika Mukan Gallery invites you to experience Akuluono not only as an exhibition, but as a space for reflection on what we inherit, what we build, and what we owe one another. Through Nduka Ikechukwu’s work, we are reminded that lasting change often begins with small, intentional acts rooted in care, community, and a belief in shared futures ____________________________ Opening Reception: 🗓️ Saturday 19 April ⏳12pm-6pm At, 31b Bashorun Okusanya Avenue Lekki Phase 1, Lagos. #wunikamukangallery #ndukaikechukwu #exhibitionnews #artexhibition #lagos #igboamaka

Join us at G.A.S. Lagos on February 12th, 2026 for Artist Open Studio, a presentation and walkthrough of works developed by current resident Nduka Ikechukwu (@nduka_ike ) during his four-week residency at G.A.S. During his stay, Nduka focused on research and exploring new ways of interpreting his practice through fresh experiments, ideas, and approaches. He has produced new works using his signature materials, industrial strip belts and net belts, while also experimenting with the incorporation of calabash, a traditional household utensil made from the dried, hollowed-out shell of a gourd, a material he first began exploring last year. Driven by a desire to share his process and receive feedback from the public, Nduka will offer a critical look into his practice and recent activities at G.A.S., reflecting on his research and the ideas shaping his current body of work. 🔗 Register to attend via the link in bio! ____________ Nduka’s residency is generously supported by The Osahon Okunbo Foundation (@theosahonokunbofoundation ). #gaslagos #gasfoundation #residencyprogram #ndukaikechukwu #openstudio

On February 12, 2026, G.A.S. Lagos hosted Artist Open Studio, a presentation and walkthrough of works developed by Nduka Ikechukwu (@nduka_ike )during his four-week residency. The programme was structured in two parts: a closed feedback session with art professionals followed by a public presentation, creating space for constructive dialogue before opening the work to a wider audience. The event began with a welcome from Communications and Events Coordinator Catherine Bardi (@bardi.oo ), after which Nduka shared an overview of his artistic journey, beginning with his training at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where experimentation with unconventional materials shaped his early practice using clay sandbox shells. During his residency, Nduka reflected on the relationship between his recent works and earlier series, focusing on how material and process communicate ideas. The works created at G.A.S., which he titles Ancient and Modern, explores repair as both material process and cultural metaphor. Inspired by childhood memories of repeatedly patched clothing, the works reflect a culture of fixing and reuse. The introduction of the calabash, combined with sewing and tying, transforms a domestic object into a vessel for memory. Following the presentation, attendees engaged in a Q&A before the public programme, where Nduka guided guests through the works in small groups, sharing insights into his process and research. 🔗 Read more via the link in bio. ______ Nduka’s residency is generously supported by The Osahon Okunbo Foundation (@theosahonokunbofoundation ). #gasfoundation #toof #guestartistsspace #artistresidency #ndukaikechukwu

On January 30, 2026, G.A.S. Lagos hosted Face to Face, a networking and exchange session facilitated by current resident artist Nduka Ikechukwu (@nduka_ike ). Designed as an intimate gathering, the session created space for meaningful exchange between Nduka and members of the Lagos art community, including artists and cultural workers. Based in Nsukka, Nduka joined G.A.S. for a four-week residency focused on research, networking, and the development of new work shaped through dialogue and encounter. Upon arriving at G.A.S., he expressed a strong interest in connecting with practitioners beyond his immediate context and expanding his professional network within Lagos. The session unfolded over approximately two hours and began with brief introductions, offering participants insight into Nduka’s practice and current research direction. Participants engaged in one-on-one and small-group discussions, sharing ideas around practice, process, and navigating artistic growth across different geographies. 🔗 Read more via the link in bio. ______ Nduka’s residency is generously supported by The Osahon Okunbo Foundation (@theosahonokunbofoundation ). #gasfoundation #toof #guestartistsspace #artistresidency #ndukaikechukwu

G.A.S. Foundation is excited to welcome Nduka Ikechukwu (@nduka_ike ), a Nigerian visual artist, for an immersive four-week residency at G.A.S. Lagos. Based in Nsukka, his practice spans installation, sculpture, and textiles, with a strong focus on questions of identity and traditional culture rooted in the Igbo apprenticeship system and the role of titles as markers of progress within the Igbo society. Central to his practice is the use of industrial strap belts, which he stitches into layered forms to examine labour, endurance, and collective effort. Through this material, Nduka articulates metaphors of strength, resilience, and human relationships exploring the ties that bind people to place, purpose, and one another. “I hope to use this opportunity to focus more intentionally on refining the forms and colour language within my work, while further experimenting with the inclusion of calabash as a material. The residency will also allow me to explore ideas around knowledge-sharing, and I am particularly interested in organising a workshop for young children, something I have long wanted to do as a way of passing on skills and encouraging creative curiosity.” 🔗 Read more via the link in bio. ______ Nduka’s residency is generously supported by The Osahon Okunbo Foundation (@theosahonokunbofoundation ). Image credit: 1. Nduka IKECHUKWU @nduka_ike One Of Our Own, 2025 Technique mixte : Ceintures à sangle, calebasses et corde en polyester. 〽️〽️〽️〽️〽️〽️〽️ “One of Our Own” is a statement of inclusiveness and a firm rejection of marginalization. It calls on 21st century Africa to choose unity in the face of ethnic and traditional exclusion. Drawing inspiration from the treatment of the osu and ohu castes in South-Eastern Nigeria, where I come from, I decided to blend my traditional medium of net belts with polyester ropes and calabash. The first two evoke unity, strength, and continuity, while the calabash carries the resonance of ancestral connection and wisdom #contemporaryart #calebasse #biso2025 #nigeria #scuplture #techniquesmixtes #mixmedia #faso

To me, the most important triads in a friendship circle are trust, support and understanding. However, even in the absence of defined friendships, I have always wished the world would be that simple where something as simple as trust wouldn’t always be in doubt. A world where people in positions would always support regardless and we could always come to a peaceful resolution. I believe the world can do better. From #FilteredGoodRythmForGoodMorals series. Conversations at the Gerald Chukwuma Art Prize 💬 This year, we introduced panel discussions to the "Gerald Chukwuma Art Prize" experience, and what an incredible addition it was! Our distinguished panel featured: 🎨 Nduka Ikechukwu - a sculptor 🏆 Obinna Eze - 2nd winner of the Gerald Chukwuma Art Prize 🎯 Ugonna Ibekwe - exhibition curator (moderator) The conversation proved to be a true eye-opener for our students! Many heard practical insights about the art world for the first time, sparking so much curiosity that we couldn't accommodate all their questions within the allotted 45 minutes. Here are photo highlights, beautifully captured by @jibrinarts ➡️ #GeraldChukwumaPrize #ArtEducation #PanelDiscussion #ArtCareers #StudentEngagement #NigerianArt #ArtWorld #ContemporaryArt #Mentorship #artcommunity
